Columbus Could Soon Offer Domestic Partner Benefits
Wednesday, February 3, 2010City leaders are pushing to extend health benefits to domestic partners. The city was one of the first, but now one of the last employers in central Ohio, to offer the benefits to people who are living together but are not married. Mayor Michael Coleman is in serious discussions with City Councilman Andrew Ginther to have a plan in place by the end of the year, Kocot reported.

Columbus Could Soon Offer Domestic Partner Benefits

Long time coming. Great news!
Excellent news!
:)
That is great news!
Why, oh why do I read the comments on the news sites? So much hate and ignorance.
I say way to go, should have happened a long time ago.
Great news Columbus!!
This is wonderful!!!
Hopefully they allow all types of domestic partners to qualify for the benefits. Columbus Public Schools specifically told straight couples that they could not get benefits for their domestic partners since it was not recogonized under Ohio Law.
My GF and I have lived togethe for over 5 years and own a home and 2 dogs together. We don’t plan on getting married. I can not get on her health plan, but if we were a gay couple we would qualify. I think the policies need to be equal to all types of domestic partnerships as long as their is some sort of documentation. There will always be those that try to work scam the system.
I totally support this movement, we just need to make sure we don’t exclude a group to include another.
Yes, we wouldn’t want a policy to exist that discriminates against straight people. That just wouldn’t be fair.
Being a lofty, dreaming idealist, I have a hard time with this topic…
Mez, the whole point of domestic partner benefits programs is to provide benefits to those for whom they are made inaccessible otherwise. The 2004 election saw to it that hetero marriage is legal in Ohio–any other arrangement is not.
In my ideal world, marriage would not be the qualification for access to tax benefits, insurance coverage, etc. but at least you’ve got the law on your side at the moment.
My proposal: Give government the responsibility of administering civil unions which take care of the financial aspect. Then, “marriage” is the blessing of the church/personal community to the individuals involved. Then, the government isn’t involved in any sort of discrimination and individual religious groups can make their own calls about who they want to include/exclude.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
In the night the Columbus City Council approved extending health benefits to the gay and unmarried partners of city employees, more people showed up to talk about the Columbus Clippers.
It’s a testament to how much has changed in the 12 years since city leaders first tried to offer domestic-partner benefits. Then, people packed the City Council chambers to praise the council for taking the side of fairness or to rail against a decision that they said would undermine morals.
