Columbus rent is the cheapest among big cities in the country, according to a recent Forbes magazine story. At $626 a month on average, Columbus is more than 4.5 times less than New York City, ranked most expensive.

Columbus’ affordability and reasonable cost of living mean Brandon Presz, originally of Chicago, can enjoy the local venues and nearby national retailers. “I’m able to do the things here that I wouldn’t be able to do in other cities,” Presz said.

A friend of his who recently moved to New York paid more for a broker’s fee than she did for her first month’s rent there. He pays $450 for his one-bedroom German Village apartment with hardwood floors. “I’m sure something like this would go for $2,000 in New York City,” Presz said.

Depends on what you consider cheap and what you consider downtown.

In my explorations, I’ve seen plenty of cheap places within a mile or two of Broad and High. And plenty of expensive places too.

  • Question: Why is Jefrfey Place on the rental site you linked to? Are their rentals there? I mean, it looks like they haven’t built much- I haven’t been by in a while, though.

    Statement: I like this place

    Me too!

A few months ago I actually called them up to see if they’d be willing to sell me this unit they’re still trying to rent for $1285. I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t gone yet because that’s a hell of a deal for a 1500 sqft open floor loft on Gay St in the heart of downtown.

Walker, That’s a great unit, in my opinion, the epitome of urban. I’ve been looking at that place on their site every once in awhile. They weren’t willing to sell it?

There are places from $225-$3300 Downtown. That’s pretty damn cheap, though I’m sure it’s not much to look at.where is $225? To live?

  • Just a suggestion to ppl looking at 60 spring…. don’t. I have now lived there for 2.5 years and watched the complex go straight down hill. We are on the rent to own program and have strongly considered buying, but the property up keep is horrible, even the leasing agent who “bought” a unit has moved out. The turnaround is ridiculous, and for what we pay this is not what one would expect. Now with all this being said, we do LOVE our space, even though i can hear my neighbor sigh or cough. Just beware before getting involved with 60 spring what your are getting into.

60 Spring is run by Cityspace, same group that runs The Jeffrey (not to be confused with Jeffrey Place).

I looked at a condo in The Jeffrey and was very seriously interested in buying a unit there. I won’t go into details, but the deal fell apart spectacularly and I was shocked by some of the horseshit that Cityspace was trying to get away with… literally telling me that they couldn’t put certain promises down on paper, but that I should just “trust them”!

Everyone’s mileage may vary, but I won’t ever have anything to do with Cityspace again.

Nope. They said not at this time anyway, but potentially in the future. Instead they pointed me toward 225 North Fourth, which I think is a very cool looking building, but all of the units with downtown views have already sold and I didn’t really want a balcony view of Fourth Street and parking lots going towards Columbus State. :?

  • I appreciate everyone’s comments on this topic so much! So many good links to places to rent….EXACTLY what I need to start concentrating on! :D

I see what you mean, Walker, I wouldn’t want a view of a parking lot. I have a friend who used in 60 Spring. Great place, but his view was a parking garage.

A friend of mine had the exact same problem trying to buy in the Broadwin. He was also told “We’ll do ___ for you but don’t tell anyone else in the building because we won’t do it for them”. Shady dealings.

I’ve been keeping my eye on this building for a little while. Does anyone know anyone who has moved in there?

Yep, suffice it to say that they don’t sell property, they try to sell lifestyle. I was amazed and appalled by how offended their agent acted when I tried to talk about specifics, she was obnoxiously insistent that they weren’t important. I’d ask about things like whether or not the washer/dryer unit came with the place, and she’d talk about the stupid espresso machine in the lobby, and how *FUN* and *HIP* it is to live there (using those exact words over and over…) When I asked about some really strange (and ultimately very costly) contract points, she out and out lied about what they meant.

My experience with them embodied every negative cliche about real estate agents. Wouldn’t touch ‘em with a 10 foot poll.
