Columbus rent is the cheapest among big cities in the country, according to a recent Forbes magazine story. At $626 a month on average, Columbus is more than 4.5 times less than New York City, ranked most expensive.

Columbus’ affordability and reasonable cost of living mean Brandon Presz, originally of Chicago, can enjoy the local venues and nearby national retailers. “I’m able to do the things here that I wouldn’t be able to do in other cities,” Presz said.

A friend of his who recently moved to New York paid more for a broker’s fee than she did for her first month’s rent there. He pays $450 for his one-bedroom German Village apartment with hardwood floors. “I’m sure something like this would go for $2,000 in New York City,” Presz said.

  • Hey look, that’s my name in that article. 8)

  • How does it feel to let the whole city in on what you pay in rent?

  • I think that its great how cheap Columbus is.

That being said, I have to say that my auto expenses increased substantially when I moved here. When I left Philly, I had no car payment, no gas costs, and no auto insurance (approximately 250, 80, 60, respectively, or 390 in total…which I will round up to 400 to include random maintenance) . I just paid about 100 bux per month for a Transit Pass (which I paid for with pre-tax dollars from work). I occasionally took taxi’s and stuff, but usually not more than 3 times a month and at about 8 bux per ride.

Either way, If you tack my auto expenses on to my rent, I come out close to even.

  • You can always consider biking.

  • I’m far more impressed by how cheap alcoholic drinks are.

My god, I went to Bodega and bought 3 drinks for 10.50 or something.

    Thats awesome.

  • Tip Top certainly has some cheap drinks. Back on topic (a first, I know), I was going to rent a place in Schumacher Place across from the Giant Eagle that was 3 bedroom for $725, but the owner wasn’t there for our appointed showing. But I found a bargain right downtown and my friends found a cheap and large place in OTE.

You should go on Monday and get their $1.75 Draft PBR & Grilled Cheese Panini deal.

I bike as much as I can, but it doesn’t work for my employer/work situation.

I’m really proud of how few miles I put on my car this year. But the reality is that based on my life circumstances Columbus doesn’t have a good enough public transit system for its relatively un-dense layout. There just aren’t alot of options. Its either drive or ride your bike or walk if you’re happen to live in one of the few functioning walkable neighborhoods.

Our new pad is 3 bedrooms and our mortgage payment (including tax and insurance) is less than that.

I’m considering my new property tax-paying adventures to be “mandatory philanthropy”. Everyone could help out the city of Columbus by buying some property and chipping in that extra cash! Who knows. Maybe it could help the symphony out of their rut too.

    I tell this to everybody.

    Short North

  • Do you work in a ‘burb? Like Dublin or Westerville or something? If so, I could see how that would be quite a pickle.

yeah, I work out on shrock rd off of 270. Its technically still columbus.

There really aren’t many options for getting out there. I could bike it, but its a tad bit far and that area is not bike friendly at all. I’ve done it on the weekends though.

Its little things too that make having a car really quite handy…not required, but very handy…..when comparing Columbus to cities with more fleshed out multi-modal transit systems, you should add in the cost of driving….and Cars aren’t cheap.

  • I advocate choice in transit, not restriction to one form or another.

I could see how biking that distance could be outisde of what you consider a viable option.

There are places from $225-$3300 Downtown. That’s pretty damn cheap, though I’m sure it’s not much to look at.
