Columbus is Forbes’ 19th Best City for Singles 2007

By: Walker

Another year, another singles poll from Forbes. Columbus ended up slipping from the #11 spot in 2006 down to #19 in 2007. Still not a bad spot on the list.

Who knows how they actually come up with this data, but the areas we scored well in include Number of Singles, Culture, Online Dating, and Cost of Living Alone. The areas we need improvement in include Job Growth, Nightlife, and we actually placed dead last in “Coolness Factor”.

That’s right. According to Forbes, Columbus is less cool than Milwaukee, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Cincinnati.

No. What about it? Does it have anything to do with smoking something other than cigarettes?

  • these polls are so lopsided and should by no means give the impression that columbus isn’t a good place for singles. to think we’re not cooler than cincinnati and kansas city, both of which i went to and don’t care to go back. i’ve never been to milwaukee or buffalo, but come on, cooler than the cbus, give me a break. i’ll even defend denver on this one. i’ve been there once and, even though i hate to say it, i think it’s a cooler city than the cbus, but to drop it from 1 to 16 is ridiculous. that just shows you how lopsided this poll is.

If you feel this way, and, believe me, I feel the same way; shouldn’t we also dismiss these polls when Columbus is beaming with high numbers? :?

    “EYE” see.

  • Be safe while being single!!

  • I think the coolness factor for Columbus is so low cuz most ppl not from here think we’re some hick town with only farms and cows. True that we have the latter, but we’re also a pretty decent sized, growing city.

Whenever I go back to L.A. to visit and tell ppl that I live in Ohio, they automatically think I’m from the boonies or some shit haha. But I guess ppl in L.A. think that about anyone/anything not from L.A. They live with blinders on

Someone mentioned a campaign to promote how kick ass this city really is… let’s get it started already!

  • Just don’t let any official organization create the ads or sponsor them. They will undoubtedly make the city look BORING.

Someone get something going to have people submit their own ads about Columbus. Even if people post ads that make Columbus look bad then it looks good for being able to laugh at itself and take criticism. Viral marketing baby.

  • Buffalo? Buffalo??? Surely you jest.

Perhaps the problem is that you say you’re from a state, while people from LA will say they are from a city. I never tell people I’m from Ohio. I’m from Columbus. Period.

I really don’t think we need to advertise at all. We need to just DO COOL STUFF and let the COOL STUFF speak for itself.

  • We are cooler than Pittsburgh, right?

  • same here Walker, when i meet someone, i say i’m from columbus, ohio, not just ohio. i talk the city up just to the point where i don’t sound obsessed or like i’m pulling that old “my city is better than your city” speach.

and pittsburgh is the scum of the earth, well maybe just the sports teams, the town is pretty cool. i take that back. the state of michigan is the scum of the earth, the city pf pittsburgh runs a close second.

Good point. I do however immediately follow up by saying I’m from Columbus and that it’s a big city, but they still think I’m from cow town

  • I think Columbus is in need of a landmark or somethin famous to put it on the map with the rest of the pack. Cleveland has King James, who is obviously very recognizable to everyone now. Cinci has recognizable pro teams like the Reds and Bengals. Columbus has _______ . <—– Besides OSU football I think we could put somethin nice here. And no, the Crew and Blue Jackets aren’t enough.

I don’t think we’re cut out to compete with cities like LA or NYC or Chicago. Even if we had the coolest landmark in the world, we’re still a few million people short of being accepted as one of the leaders of the pack.

Look at the second-tier cities we’re more similar to. Name a famous landmark in Denver or Portland or Charlotte or Austin or Nashville. There are none that nationally recognized.

We don’t need some giant phallic symbol jutting up out of our skyline. It might look impressive in a photo, but as far as actually living here it wouldn’t do much for the locals other than make us jaded about the keychains and tshirts that the tourists would buy with photos of that landmark on it.

  • Hey, um… I like Pittsburgh. :P

But, at least people beyond state lines will be wearing a shirt from here. (that doesn’t have OSU on it). I agree with Ltrgman, we need something to put this city on the national map. People can’t even wear a Hard Rock Columbus T-shirt??? When I visited Indianapolis there was a hard rock and a circle monument which becomes a “natural” meeting point of any visitor to the town. We need more state history museums downtown and a large iconic Columbus landmark similar to Barcelona’s monument but larger with an observation deck.

Oh. I thought we were talking about making Columbus COOL. I can’t recall every seeing someone wearing a Hard Rock Cafe T-Shirt who I thought was cool.

  • LOL I am just coming with ways to increase Columbus national image (since I believe the reason we ranked 40 is because of lack of knowledge). I believe national image is our weakest point. We will never be those big cities b/c the big cool cities have those iconic symbols, big sports, and hard rock cafes in them all of which attract vistors to them.

  • Walker wrote making Columbus COOL.

by the way besides cool creating cool, what can Columbus do to increase its national image? Because now Cleveland and Cincy have us beat on that.
