Columbus gets positive write-up in Chicago Tribune

The Chicago Tribune wrote Who knew Columbus was so cool?

My husband and I had no idea. But when work brought us here, we found it to be nothing like we expected. There was a large and bustling arts district. There was a gourmet food market to rival Seattle’s famed Pike Place Market. There was a historic district, German Village, with cobbled streets, rehabbed brick homes and cafes. There were restaurants that bested many of our dining experiences in Chicago.

It was downright hip. And so was The Lofts, a boutique hotel built into a historic 1882 former brick warehouse.

The article is primarily a review of the Lofts hotel, but Columbus gets some positive notice as well (even if the opening sentence is a bit backhanded).

  • Thanks, Chicago—

    [looks bashfully at ground]

—I think you’re pretty cool, too.

Seriously, that is just the kind of writeup I like to see about us. Stirring up curiosity and whatnot…

  • I’m feelin’ the love…

  • I copied what was already above so removed it.

  • geezwow.

  • Just watch that video and think of how cool we’d look to visitors if they could check out all of that stuff by zipping around town on a streetcar!

    It would be all…

You can grab lunch at the North Market, then use your hotel room key as your streetcar fare to zip down to the south side of downtown for an afternoon of strolling around the brick sidewalks of historic German Village. Then, you can shoot back up to campus to see William Wegman’s exhibit at the Wexner Center for the Arts. You can shoot back to the Short North to do some shopping at Jinny and Tigertree, then have dinner at Rosendale’s before taking your final streetcar ride back to your hotel.

…without the over-enthusastic run on sentences of course.

  • The indie vibe of The Lofts fits right in

That’s one of the best reviews of Columbus I’ve ever read, btw. To express actual jealousy of things in Columbus that Chicago doesn’t have???

    holy cow!

p.s. Apparently they didn’t get the memo that the Short North Arts District is so lame though LOL!

    Ha!

  • That is a nice article, especially being from Chicago. Nice to hear great compliments.

  • I’ve just sent this to all my coworkers. It brings a tear to my eye to hear those who, seemingly, have everything (Chicago) rave about what Columbus has to offer, and why Chicago doesn’t have an equal. It’s nice to feel the love, especially from the kids. Keep kicking ass, Columbus!

  • Columbus: The major newspapers of America are surprised we’re cool capitol of the world.

  • Chi-town has always had a decent image of Columbus on refrence. It’s still very good to have it make print. Now we have 49 states and the rest of the world to convince!

  • Yeah, way to get Illinois first.

How are you doing with the water situation there? I have been reading an interesting blog recently.

    Unique situation indeed.

Oh, the people of Georgia have nothing at all to fear. I know that the water shortage is getting dangerously bad. But, all is going to be well.

Why? You might ask. Because the governor is holding a special prayer service today to pray for rain.

(On a convenient side note, it seems that god has put a little rain in their forecast tomorrow already. So nice planning on the prayer service.)

  • They video definitely does Columbus some justice as well.

  • One question about the article:

What did they originally expect out of Columbus?

  • snootchie bootchies.

I would like to see the sentiment shift to “Columbus: As Cool As You Knew It Would Be”

But we’ll take kudos of any form, right? :o :o

  • I don’t think any city receives that treatment. Cities with bad reputations get articles written about how they are better than you’ve heard, cities with great reputations get stories written about how its all hype.

  • When did we ever have a bad reputation.

Let’s be Columbus and stop keeping up with the Jones’.

Th Shorth North is kind of lame.
