Columbus City Schools unveils its new downtown High School on Monday night, complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony. It’s the first high school downtown in nearly 30 years, NBC 4‘s Tanya Hutchins reported.

One of the highlights is the Culinary Arts program. “We are going to have a full-service restaurant. We’re going to have an outside café, a coffee shop and a full catering company that will be run and managed by the students,“ said Pegeen Cleary, culinary arts instructor.

Students will learn to prep, cook and serve the food as well as clean up the restaurant, which will be open to the public.

I hope it is a sign that downtown is not as dangerous as depicted on local TV infotainment. That instead it is a place where young adults can be educated and co-exist peacefully. I think there is a qualification on the matching state funding for new school construction that the building has to be LEED certified.
