Columbus Crew Punch The 2009 Playoff Ticket

By: pjguldan

The Columbus Crew is playoff bound for the second year in a row. With this weekend’s 2-0 win against the L.A. Galaxy the team has enough points to qualify for the postseason with 4 games left to play in the regular season. After setting the record for worst start by a defending MLS champion with a 0-2-5 start, the Crew has a league best 12 wins and leads the league by 3 points over closest competitor, Houston.

The Crew remains busy as they set their sights on two more goals; a second straight Supporters Shield, given to the team with the best record in the league, and qualification to the knockout stages of the regional Champions League tournament.

The Crew can take steps towards both goals this week with two home games this week. The team resumes play in the Champions League on Tuesday against Costa Rican champions Saprissa at 8pm. A win would qualify Columbus for the knockout stage of the competition next March. They then play Seattle and former coach Sigi Schmid on Saturday at 7:30pm. Tickets are available through TheCrew.com and at the Crew Stadium box office.

  • COLUMBUS TIL I DIE!

  • I love the crew! even though i don t get to many games I check weekly to catch any updates!

  • spent the LA game in the Nordecke and took some friends, it was a blast. If you’ve never done it, you’re missing out on a great unique Columbus experience.

Anyone see Shawn Mitchell’s post today re: the Crew front office’s long term plans for possible redevelopment/relocation of Crew Stadium? Any proposals by the urban-cognoscenti for a downtown location for a new soccer stadium?

p.s. If the Crew beat Saprissa tomorrow night in Crew Stadium we advance to the playoff round of the CONCACAF Champions League
one step closer the FIFA Club World Cup. have faith. Columbus versus the World.

  • I did see the downtown stadium plans, but several years is a long time. I would hate a Delaware County option. I would go for Hilliard before that.

  • can we get a revitalization of the downtown plans. !  and they are the Columbus crew not the deleware or hilliard crew!  I d rather it stay where it is if those are the only options.

  • They should try to build up around the stadium right now. something like wrigleyville…..  arena district 2 ?

  • If they build a new stadium, I hope it’s in the Arena District.

  • I still love the rendering from 1997 when they last looked at putting a stadium downtown.

  • Columbus draw with the Puerto Rico Islanders (USL 1) tonight 1-1. Renteria scores for the Crew in the 74th minute.

The Columbus advances as one of the 8 teams to compete in the tournament stage of the CONCACAF Champions Leagues next spring! Go Crew!

p.s. last home this Sunday at 5 PM. Supporter’s shield on the line versus New England.
