Jackets Clinch First Ever Playoff Berth

Defenseman Fedor Tyutin scored the lone goal in the shootout and the Columbus Blue Jackets earned their first playoff berth in franchise history Wednesday night, beating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3.

Columbus’ Rick Nash scored his 39th goal with 5:30 left in regulation to tie it at 3 and set up overtime. The Blue Jackets’ Antoine Vermette also scored and assisted on Jason Williams’ goal in regulation.

  • That third period tying goal by Nash and the assist to get it to him was a thing of beauty.  Or rather, it was ugly, and they still handled it well despite the fact that the puck was skipping and bouncing around, which is even better.

  • And Hitch had Tyutin second in the shootout. He’s never been in a shootout before, and he scored!

  • NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YAY!  So, am I to understand that I buy playoff tickets on Saturday prior to the NHL letting everyone know *when* the games are?  I just see a whole lot of scheduling conflicts with buying tickets that way :(

  • This is huge for our city, beyond the obvious excitement it brings for the sports fans. This will mean an extra series (or more hopefully) worth of sales at all of the surrounding bars and restaurants; extra revenue for hotels, etc. Not to mention, now this will keep Nationwide Arena running when the Clippers begin their season. Hopefully one of the playoff games is the night of an afternoon Clippers game. What a great day that would be. This is really great for Columbus all around.

  • You can kind of guess at roughly when the home games will be. There’s no way the Jackets can get home ice advantage in this series, so the first two games will be away, probably the 15th and 17th, then two home games, probably the 19th and 21st, then it goes away, home, away (if it goes seven games). They usually have a day off between games, although if they wound up playing Detroit, I could see the schedule being tweaked and there possibly being back-to-back games to accommodate NBC. If they’re playing Vancouver or Calgary or San Jose, that’s less likely to happen, but there might be some two day gaps because the travel is longer.

There are only 3000 tickets left as of today after the STH presale, so if you do want to go, you will need to go ahead and get them Saturday without seeing the schedule, or resign yourself to paying a scalper.

As for me, anything that’s on my schedule in the next two weeks is tentative pending the playoff schedule, even if it’s been bought and paid for months ago (Neko Case concert, Crew game).

  • Awesome!  Our only team is finally good.  I agree that selling tickets without having the schedule is a dumb idea.  I’d try to get tickets but my luck the game would be on the night I work till 10.  Anyone know if they are still going to do the Huntington $10 green seats thing?

The Blue Jackets won 4-3. They are headed to the playoffs punctuated by a Fedor Tyutin shootout goal. It has been a season of surprises. They might be just getting started.

  • Tickets go on sale Saturday. They are going to range from $45-$250. No cheap tickets for the playoffs.

  • I had no idea we had a soccer team! Did we win the championship? Or is this a hockey team?

  • From the CBJ website:

“The club also announced that 250 Huntington Green Seats and a minimum of 200 Rush CBJ presented by Raising Cane’s student tickets will be available for all playoff rounds. Huntington Green Seats
will be priced at $20 for first round games and $30 for the second
round, while Rush CBJ student tickets will be priced at $30 in the
first round and $35 in the second round. Prices in subsequent rounds
and complete on-sale details for both programs will be announced at a
    later date.”

Get there early! I can only imagine what time the line will begin!

  • The playoffs are gonna be on NBC?

  • What a huge step for the organization.  I’m so thrilled that they finally made the playoffs!  I should be going to the first home game.  Can’t wait!

  • Some of the games will be on NBC.  In the early rounds, some of the games will be on Versus, but a lot of the CBJ games will likely be on FSN Ohio.  If they advance, they’ll get more national exposure.

  • This is awesome! Hope to get a ticket to at least one game!

  • Mr. Mac would’ve eaten this up

    THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Last spring, at a public memorial in Nationwide Arena for Blue Jackets majority owner John H. McConnell, team captain Rick Nash gave a eulogy on behalf of his teammates: “Mr. McConnell would have probably liked us to win more often and we will, Mr. Mac, I promise.”

On Wednesday — almost one year since McConnell died after a long battle with cancer — the Blue Jackets clinched the franchise’s first berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 shootout win over the Blackhawks in Chicago.

  • The good news is they will not have to travel much and had an even record against the Wings this year. Anything can happen in the playoffs. I’m hoping my parents on Long Island have Versus on their cable system as I’m headed east this week.

  • Will venue change help Blue Jackets? Red Wings Hockey
Nash might be harder to contain

As the first-round series now shifts to Columbus for Games 3 and 4, the Blue Jackets undoubtedly will take comfort in having gone 25-13-3 at Nationwide Arena during the regular season, with two of those victories having come against the Red Wings.
