The owners of the Kickstart, a motor-scooter shop at 913 N. High St., soon will be adding caffeine to the fuel mix. Chris Cannon and Jodi Stully have set up a separate space for a coffee shop, which they expect to open in mid-August.
The coffee will come from Caruso’s, a Cleveland-area roaster with a number of central Ohio clients, including on the Ohio State University campus. Also available will be cookies from ABC Cookies in the Arena District and cupcakes from Bakery Gingham in German Village. Cannon said he also is talking with the Short North’s Eleni-Christina about other baked goods.

Coffee on two wheels

I’m glad to hear of the local baked goods, especially Eleni Christina and Gingham. But why would they sell non-Columbus coffee? Stauf’s or Brioso beans would be such a good fit there.
Agreed. Maybe they’re just trying to differentiate themselves? Caruso’s looks like it mostly sells blends rather than single-origin coffees, which can be a good thing (Mocha-Java is a blend, after all) — but usually isn’t, especially when they don’t tell you which beans go into the blend. I’d rate this as “mildly ominous.”
I agree that Stauf’s or Brioso would be excellent choices, probably their best. Even if they’re bound and determined to buy from outside the city, though, there are other specialty coffee roasters that would be excellent choices.
Are the owners from Cleveland or something?
I asked the same question of the shop manager, Jacob. He told me that the owners were looking to go for something “from Ohio”. It’s a step in the right direction, I suppose. We’ll see how it goes, I guess.
the reason we chose Caruso’s coffee is because it’s fantastic coffee and something that’s different from what our competitors sell. Mojo lounge is just down the street from us and Stauf’s main location is not far either. We tried samples from a number of other roasters and found Caruso’s coffee to be the best that we cupped. If you enjoy very high quality coffees, you won’t be disappointed. Also, while they have a large variety of blends, Caruso’s also roasts many varietal, estate, and single-origin coffees.
my favorite coffee and what i consider to be the best in Columbus, from Yeah, me too! is not available for wholesale. otherwise, it was our first and obvious choice.
i cant wait to start coming over for a beverage and pastry, wherever the coffee is from, as long as it’s from Ohio somewhere…
we’re still looking for someplace to get fantastic scones and bagels if anyone has any ideas.
I hope you plan early morning hours – North Star just informed me today that they are not going to open until 9am now.

also, my wife’s name is Jodi, but I call her “stully”– she has taken my real last name since we got hitched (even though her maiden name is pretty cool). so if you come to the shop, call her Jodi or Stully.
Jodi Stully is just redundant; it’s like calling me Chris AssClown.

We will be open at 6:00.

Hi Chris, and welcome. Let me apologize for my skepticism, above. I couldn’t find anything but blends on the Caruso’s website, and in my experience corporate-sounding blends, rather than being thoughtful mergers of the best characteristics of individual varietals, are often dumping grounds for mediocre beans. I’m glad to hear that Caruso is more than it seems (very glad, actually, since I’m one of your neighbors).
Which coffees will you be offering?

our first order is being determined this week. we’ve hired Linda from the Coffee Table who is helping us with the operational aspects of the coffee shop.
i understand your skepticism of blends; i’m the same way about flavored coffees. i keep telling linda that we can just order the flavored coffee ground vs whole bean since i don’t want to taint (snicker) a grinder, then ever use it on real (non-flavored) coffee again. she insists it will make a difference to some. ultimately she wins– her 15 yrs experience trump my guesswork.
I’m not skeptical about flavored coffees at all. Skepticism implies doubt. As Jeff, the roaster/owner of Brioso, was captured on camera saying once, “Flavored coffees are evil.”
I’m with you on not wanting to taint a grinder. I frankly don’t know whether people would taste the difference if it’s pre-ground — the flavoring might cover up any lack of freshness, but who knows. Why not invest in a second grinder for those beans? It’d be kind of tragic to devote a Mazzer Mini to flavored beans, but I bet something like my little $90 Breville would be very workable.
Hey Chris,
You can get a nice used commercial bulk grinder from ebay. Something like:

Best of luck to you, and I’ll sure stop in and say hello.
Much better.
I was originally going to suggest a blade grinder…. :)

thanks. i was going to bring in my rocky rancillio from home, but that’s not very much capacity. aside from the $35 for shipping, that one’s a good deal.
even with the shipping i guess. even if it needs a thorough cleaning, it’s still only flavored coffee, right?
Just wanted to say that I’m really looking forward to visiting this place.
With that lot, you’ve got a great space for some cool two-wheeled themed events!
May I suggest Yosick’s on 5th in German Village for the scones and other assorted pastries? (you may want to check out the friands, which are unusual and fabulous.)
thanks, we’ll check them out. just got some biscotti from christina elena’s and while i don’t personally care for the biscotti, several tasters agree that it’s excellent. i probably hacked the spelling of christina e.’s, but you get the idea. i’m told they can provide us with scones too.
i’ll be trying one from yosick’s first.

we’re hosting the columbus cutters’ scoot-a-cue barbecue this year and stully has ideas for a scoot-in where we would project a movie on the garage door here in the evening.
