  • I realize you believe you’re a member of this enormous, underserved, anti-car demographic Keith…the reality is, there’s about as many members in the Peach District as their are in your demographic. I’ve been an “urban dweller” almost as long as you’ve been alive, but I’m glad that you’re clear on what my needs are, because clearly I’m confused.

  • Parking helps stores weather it will be adjacent to the store or a few blocks. I am ok with walking a few blocks if needed.
But I could tell you that most are pro Car and won’t take the effort to walk a few blocks. That’s the Difference I think. The number of Urban living, city Transit or biking is way out weighed by Drivers.

  • ^Always glad to help. I’m not anti-car, I’m pro-integration, btw.

I think people will walk. People park in parking lots only to walk a long distance after all. The problem is that it’s not nearly as easy to get around by bus, and while doable biking can be a hairy experience on some roads that people aren’t going to bother with. If you only provide people with one good option: they’re just going to take it without much thought.

  • ” If you only provide people with one good option: they’re just going to take it without much thought.”

    Well I think that depends.
If there were 2 book stores One was in a place in town that has no parking. The other Does I am most likely going to visit the one with parking.

  • People in Columbus need to stop thinking car and start thinking public transportation or walking, Who needs a car anyways they are ugly ;)

  • I’d recommend to both of you that you open a business that is customer traffic based, do it in an area that is inaccessible by car or at least inconvenient…but really great for bikes and walking…and then after your first year of operation tell me what you think.

  • As nice as car free sounds for some it’s just not a option and never will be.

  • That is only if you let the people think that they need cars. I lived in Portland which is half the size of Columbus and you always see people walking on the streets and street level retail.

  • …I understand you’re new to the site, so I’ll give you a few minutes to try and find the primary difference between Columbus and Portland right now.

  • Just saying it can be done..maybe that is why Columbus is voted one of the fattest cities. Its such a shame people can’t think without their car

  • LOL…dude, I walk all the time, I hate driving (and I’m almost 40). I bought the car I have now for a dollar because I’m opposed to spending money on them. That said, if I needed a storefront for my business that was dependent on selling goods to walk in business, I wouldn’t base a business plan that relied on clients from COTA, bikes and pedestrians. If you’d like to try that though, go for it. let me know how it works out.

  • P.S. the anti car mentality is so easy for people under 30 without kids to lug around or a job that requires them to be out of office. I realize that you think you’re speaking some great truth, but the simple fact is you’re speaking a truth that doesn’t actually apply to the majority of people in the city. Have a couple kids and tell me how much you don’t need a car or a parking lot close to where you’re going. Suffer from arthritis and tell me to just stand in a COTA stop in the rain and wait. Not trying to be overly condescending to either your or Keith, but both of you need to live a little more life before you start trying to explain to everyone else how to live theirs.

  • I have got to agree with Core here.
There are many different lifestyles in this wonderful city some Bike some drive etc. The city is not fat because people like there cars to suggest that is funny but not true.
But I guarantee you can’t fit my places I need to be and times into a non-car situation it’s not possible. I am a firm believer that anything is possible but this is not . Maybe further down the line when we have light rails it will become easier to be car free. That’s what I hope although I enjoy taking trips out of town so I will always have a car. ;)

  • We’re voting on fattest cities now? I assumed there would be some psuedo-scientific method to figure it out.

  • Sad to see a retailer closing up downtown. We need everything down there we can.

(And I’ll desperately try to stay out of the other conversation. I don’t think Walker wants every thread turned into a pissing contest between bike/bus/walking vs. car.)

  • I’m sorry to hear this. They had such high hopes.

  • I have to say I’m really really crushed. Terry is more than a business partner and neighbor he is a very good friend of ours.

He was basically the creative driving force behind the group of us banding together, so it’s quite a blow to be losing him. He helped reinvigorate us just when we were losing Johnson’s (a huge loss for us as we fed each other footraffic for decades). I doubt there ever would have been a Red Brick District without him.

There is a lot more to say regarding parking’s importance ,one way streets, downtown, the worst retail environment everywhere since the great depression etc all that,

but for now I’m just sad my friend is leaving :-(

  • Absolutely agree, despite the reasons, it’s sad to see a small business close, particularly one that seemed to be run by such a good guy with great intentions.

  • Daniel Said: “a. it took me 15 minutes (once in walking distance) to figure out how to get there, park, etc. I was redirected by dead ends and 1 ways several times. b. i got there. had to pay a meter. c. no one was there, they were closed. no sign in the window

I always thought you were the type of guy to googlemap where you’re going as well as read the original post that states the sale is starting on the 22nd (today). :P

  • @ walker. i usually do map stuff. but 108 main st is easy enough, right?
not really. But thanks for pointing out what a tool i am!

also, i was on their website and saw they opened at 11am. I wasn’t really there for the sale, i just wanted to come by.
