Shawn Fiegelist opened City Folk’s Farm Shop last month and it has been well-received by the community.

“There have been so many people stop in to tell us how enthusiastic they are about supporting a local business,” says Fiegelist. “Not just City Folk’s Farm Shop, but also the local suppliers who are offering their products at the shop.”

Before opening City Folk’s Farm Shop, Fiegelist worked in advertising and market research. She and her husband Gerry live in the Clintonville/Beechwold area and have kept gardens, bees, worms, and rain barrels.

The long beautiful work table, built by Gerry, is ideal for classes.

“I like to grow my own food and make some household items,” says Fiegelist. “I found it challenging to find a lot of the supplies that I used.”

Several years ago she wanted to make her own cheese and discovered Leeners, a cheese culture and supply company in Northfield, Ohio offered everything she needed. Now, you can find Leeners’ cheese cultures and cheese making kits for sale at City Folk’s Farm Shop.

Gardening is becoming more popular from the eat local movement and rising grocery store prices. For those new to gardening, Fiegelist offers the following advice:

Jump in and do it! It is so much more satisfying than buying off a shelf without the benefit of knowing where it was grown and how. Growing your own food really isn’t difficult and there are no failures involved; only opportunities to learn and try again. Local farmers offering CSAs and working the farmer’s markets are another great source for good, local food to help supplement what you grow yourself.

Some of the top sellers in their first month have been the shiitake mushroom log ($25) from Somerset Herb Farm and organic chicken feed from Gregg Organics. “Bulk soil and Zoo Brew compost from Price Organics in Delaware has also been flying out the door as people get their gardens ready for the growing season,” says Fiegelist.

City Folk’s Farm Shop also has products to make your outdoor space pretty. There are cheerfully painted bird feeders for about $20 and also feeders made from bamboo. Colorful bamboo planters, gorgeous gardening tools and gloves are available. You’ll also find a wide assortment of seeds.

If you need help installing clotheslines or rain barrels, or building raised garden beds, City Folk’s Farm Shop can help with that too. They also host educational classes. Their first class on raising backyard chickens in the city garnered so much interest they are considering offering it again. Upcoming classes can be found by clicking here.

Fiegelist would like to add “a big thank you to all of those who have stopped in to offer support and encouragement to City Folk’s Farm Shop. Those actions prove that Columbus is a progressive, forward thinking city that loves it local businesses!”
