City Center Mall Demolition Underway

By: Walker

The demolition of the City Center mall is officially underway, and the new Columbus Commons project is moving forward. The skywalk over Rich Street connecting the former mall to the parking garage has already come down, and much of the southwest corner of the structure has been stripped away over the past few days. The Dispatch reported last week that the project was getting a financial boost from Franklin County Metro Parks, which contributed $2 million toward the development of the new Downtown greenspace.

Several demolition photos can be found below, and we’ll be continuing to provide updates and the demolition progresses.

  • Are you trying to say that there are ghosts inside that building? ;)

  • I’m just saying, if you were looking for some cherries and ghost meat, that’s where I’d start the search.

  • i’m impressed with the quick progress on bringing down the mall.  i walked by today and was surprised to see they are nearly down to 3rd st already.

  • I’m not holding my breath but w/city center gone the Greyhound Station will be visible from High St. – Can some money or angry words be tossed their way for an exterior spruce-up?

  • I’d like to see the green space open out towards High Street and any future buildings placed along E. Rich Street.  It would be a lot more inviting to open it to the main artery of the city.  It would also be great if they did something along the lines of Citygarden in St. Louis and turned the space into an outdoor sculpture park.

  • Couple new shots from today. Almost cleared down to Third Street along Rich:

  • Some new photos from this afternoon. It’s cleared all the way along Rich to Third Street now, and the pit looks quite deep when you see all four floors of the mall exposed like this. Pretty wild.

  • Video footage of the demolition along with an interview with Amy Taylor via DowntownColumbus.com:

  • Some more demolition photos from earlier today. Looks like the mall is maybe 75% gone now…

Shoe repairmen are stubborn, Dave Staley told me. He was working on a stiletto heel recently when I stopped by his shop in the corridor that once led from the Hyatt on Capitol Square to City Center mall.

Yes, he acknowledged, business is down significantly. But Staley has a leathery determination: scuffed by hard times, but durable.

“I love the Downtown area,” he said. “I love my customers, and I really would hate to leave, because at 47 years old, it would be like starting over.”

  • Some new photo updates from earlier today (below). A lot of the southside grounds have been cleared and leveled off, while the north end of the mall continues to be dismantled.

  • Nana-Nah-Nah… Nana-Nah-Nah… Hey Hey Hey…

  • the areas looks a lot better without the windowless wharehouse in the way.

  • Couple more photos from today… pretty much 100% gone:
