  • Isn’t that Jimmy Buffet’s place? I think I remember reading something about it in the dispatch

PARROTHEADS TO GET A CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 COLUMN : RE$TAURANT$BUSINESS 01E By Doral Chenoweth FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Unfortunatly it costs $1.95 to read it.

  • I had a dispatch online subscription while I took a technical writing class at CSCC and it was $5 per month, which wasn’t bad in my opinion since it made the articles searchable online. Came in very handy for me on multiple occasions.

I cancelled though and read the paper for free at work now. Plus, I think the dispatch’s articles are archived in some of the databases I now have access to at the Franklin U library. But if it weren’t for those things, the dispatch online ain’t bad for the money in my opinion. ;)

Oh, and anyway… yes, it is a chain owned by Jimmy Buffett. Do they have a buffet there? Because I’d be all about a Buffett buffet! hahah…

  • I never really understood the whole Buffet thing. Oh well, to each their own I suppose.

  • Well, buffets are meant to feed a lot of people easily and cheaply as they cut back on labor costs for serving people. Plus they give people a wide selection to choose from. I guess they serve their purpose, but it’s hard to get a good buffet though unless you’re going to a wedding reception.

Hometown Buffet? GROSS. Golden Corral? GROSS. Ryan’s? GROSS? Ponderosa? MORE LIKE PONDAGROSSA!!!!

  • I think some breakfast buffets or Amish restuarant buffets are awesome. :)

  • I’ve been to Cheeseburger in Paradise — yes, it is the Jimmy Buffet place, no they do not have a buffet (that I’ve seen).

The food is quite tasty, and to reference a thread from a while back, they do have a couple caribbean influenced dishes (though it’s a minority). I was a little disappointed by the dessert nachos – a very cool concept, but not too well executed I think.

My major beef with Cheeseburger in Paradise is it’s layout – inside it’s like 75% bar, which leaves very little room for regular table-dining. The enormous bar is great if you’re looking to go to a bar and drink, but the place gets backed up pretty often and it seems to be that the space would’ve been MUCH more productive as tables.

As for buffets, I’ll take an Indian buffet over regular menu ordering any day of the week — I want a little bit of everything rather than a lot of one thing. The same goes for chinese buffets, but those can be really hit or miss quality-wise, while most Indian buffets in the area I’ve been to are pretty good in that aspect.

  • Guess I should clarify, I never got the whole Jimmy Buffet thing. Big fan of the food buffet though, even if it’s bad.

  • oh, you had me confused. one has two Ts, the other has one T! ;) hahah…

  • The plantain salad is delicious! So are the mini burgers. I have friends that love the dessert nachos, so to each his own. Its a really fun atmosphere, although if you gone like live singing on Jimmy B., don’t sit near the singer.

  • I still refuse to go to a Cheeseburger in Paradise that is nowhere near a large body of water.

  • i love buffett.

go for the drinks/atmosphere not for the food. yuck

  • I am 100% not a fan of this place for a multitude of reasons. The first being the food was horrible, I remember just picking at my food. The second reason was I went a few months ago and this is definitely a place you can only visit in the summer. It must have been 10 degrees inside of the restaurant. I was frozen. Thirdly the atmosphere was just “bad”. People were singing, and yelling along with 2 musicians that were quite annoying. I cannot speak on the drinks as i do not consume alcohol during dinner. I prefer Cheeseburger Cheeseburger just right up the road.

  • Great Song! My theme song in Fact. Just ask Merc or LaChewla- The two CU people I love the most.

Tried to amend my carnivorous habits.

    Made it nearly seventy days,

Losin’ weight without speed, eatin’ sunflower seeds,

Drinkin’ lots of carrot juice and soakin’ up rays.

But at night I’d have these wonderful dreams

    Some kind of sensuous treat.

Not zucchini, fettuccini, or bulgur wheat,

But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat.

    Cheeseburger is paradise.

Heaven on earth with an onion slice.

Not too particular, not too precise.

I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.

I like mine with lettuce and tomato,

Heinz Fifty-seven and French fried potatoes.

Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer.

Well, good God Almighty, which way do I steer

    For my cheeseburger in paradise.

Heard about the old time sailor men,

    They eat the same thing again and again;

Warm beer and bread they say could raise the dead.

Well, it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn.

But times have changed for sailors these days.

    When I’m in port I get what I need;

Not just Havanas or banana or daiquiris,

But that American creation on which I feed!

Cheeseburger is paradise medium rare with mustard’d be nice

Not too particular, not too precise

I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.

I like mine with lettuce and tomato

Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes

Big kosher pickle and a cold draught beer

Well, good god Almighty which way do I steer

    For a cheeseburger in paradise

Makin’ the best of every virtue and vice.

Worth every damn bit of sacrifice

    To get a cheeseburger in paradise;

To be a cheeseburger in paradise.

I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.

  • The one in Charlottesville had some good frozen drink specials, was great in the warmer months … of course, someone always had to DD because thye build those restaurants in strip mall parking lots, so no one can walk to one.

  • I have an irrational hatred of Jimmy Buffet. I have an even bigger irrational hatred of the song “Cheeseburger in Paradise”. It was with much trepidation that I attended a co-workers going away party there…. it was exactly as I suspected: stupid. Who wants to eat bad food and listen to Jimmy Buffet songs? Parrotheads. I am not a parrothead. Bleech.

    yup.

  • corny.

+1 this place was really annoying. I would maybe enjoy the tiki bar if it were in fact looking out on the water like Margaritaville. not worth my $15.

  • Even the ones that they plop down in tropical locales…. it’s still a theme restaurant, no matter how you slice it. If I’m in the tropics, the last place I want to go is a chain. I’d way rather hit up a local joint. And I think that really kind of gets at the larger Jimmy Buffet picture… the guy’s whole persona is a brand. He boils down the gulf and tropics to a sort of homogenized theme brand, safe for suburban consumption. Now he’s slinging beer and tequila, too. In all fairness, I have eaten there before and the food was not bad. I just have little tolerance for overly themed chains.
