The U.S. Census Bureau has put the “help-wanted” sign up and is looking for 5,000 new workers across Ohio. A total of 1,000 jobs will be available in Columbus.

Jobs needed to be filled include those to train and recruit, as well as verify addresses and collect residential data for the 2010 census count. The jobs, ranging in pay from $8.25 to $19.00 per hour, are temporary, with many of them beginning now. Both parttime and fulltime jobs are available, and they are are expected to last through September 2010.

  • I work for the bureau and would most definitely encourage people to join! Given these tough economic times, government jobs are usually pretty safe/good bets and the government will almost always need people to survey U.S. citizens and examine the condition of our country!

  • I would love to do this. But I am not allowed to take on employment.

    Isn’t VISTA a one-year deal?

Yes, but I am trying to get a second term.

  • what is VISTA

Two years or so. Temporary, but not short-term.

  • We do not need another thread derailed about VISTA.

If anyone has questions, just email or PM Cyclist.

    Yes please. Thank you.

    All jobs are temporary.

I think it would be an amazing way to learn about our city and its people.

  • All jobs are temporary, but some (especially government jobs) offer pensions, long-term healthcare, vacation time, union-mandated pay raises, etc. I figured that was what columbusguy20 was talking about, and didn’t want anyone to sign up thinking this was a “government job” government job.

    I know what you mean.

Walker asked that any VISTA questions or comment should be PM’d to me, but I can’t PM myself, so I can still say it. Supposedly, VISTA’s get put at the top of the list for government jobs. So, I would probably try to get one of these census gigs if I was not pursuing a second VISTA term for the citizens of Columbus.

1.) Excellent way to learn the cities’ geography.

2.) Excellent way to understand the lanugaes, ethnic groups, and backgrounds of Columbusites.

3.) Meet lots of interesting people, and meet your neighbors.

4.) Do some national service that helps everyone in some way instead of some company’s bottom line.

5.) Find that extra person of two for the census that puts us over San Francisco in population.

    More on that…

So Cols is the 15th largest city by city proper population (I know about MSAs and SMSA’a, no need for that discussion here).

I think it will stay in the spot come 2010, but its neighbors in the ranking will be different.

I think Cols will stay at 15th with 770,000 people while SF will drop to 16th at 760,000 and Austin will leap-frog up to 14th with 780,000 people.

Here is table from wikipedia that can maybe help visualize this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population

I work for the Census Bureau too. Do I know you?

What everyone is saying about it being a great way to learn about the city has definitely applied to me.

  • Sounds like the Columbus-based census workers would cover more than the city. From the other cities hiring, I’d assume Columbus-based workers would survey all of Central Ohio and maybe SE Ohio too.
