Celebrating the 2008 COTA Challenge

It started last January with the simple idea of using public transportation to get to and from work, but only when it was convenient. I spent $45 on a transit pass and $30 on gas and set out to determine if I could make the combination work. Well, it worked and at the end of January, I still had gas in the tank.

Using those guidelines as the general rules for living throughout 2008, I have found myself, now in December, with more available money than ever before. Because I’ve been so fortunate, it’s time to pay it forward to someone else. At the end of December I will buy a January COTA transit pass for someone willing to give it a try. Ideally, I’d like to see the recipient use it for commuting to and from work a couple times per week, but I’ll place no limits on its use. Use it for whatever purpose you’d like, just use it.

  • Hey that’s pretty cool. Luckily as an OSU student I get to ride for “free”. (they still charge me every quarter $9, so it’s not really free. But all you have to do is show your BuckID and you’re good! :-) ). I generally only fill up once a month. Between the bike and the bus there really is no reason for me to drive.

  • I’ve been using COTA most of the week and the bike when COTA doesn’t run. Other than waiting for the Easton bus with no time table and waiting for the 7 downtown, I’ve been able to catch a bus within 15 minutes and often less.

I don’t think today would have been possible without COTA. Got off work earlier than expected and took the bus downtown. Grabbed lunch at Tip Top and then decided to see the new Bond film at the Gateway theatre. I walked in the theatre at 2:45, movie started at 2:40. Got my ticket and got in with the previews still playing. In a car I would have been too late to catch the movie right at the start.
