The second annual Screen on the Green movie series in Goodale Park begins this Friday evening with “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Presented by the Short North Civic Association, this will be the first of three outdoor movie nights at the softball diamond in the park’s southwest corner. All movies begin at sundown and will be preceded by a half hour of classic cartoons. Refreshments from the Clintonville Community Market, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Mikey’s Late Night Slice, and Rad Dogveg will be available for sale.

The Gateway Film Center is currently mid-way through hosting an six-week film discussion series called “Kiss Me c/Kate”, which features films starring actresses Kate Hepburn, Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett.

Stringtown Road continues it’s “Polarisification” with the planned addition of a new 14-screen Rave Motion Pictures movie theater. Rave entered the Central Ohio market four years ago when they opened their 18-screen theater at 1071 Gemini Place near the Polaris Fashion Place. The new theater will anchor a strip mall development that includes a new Hobby Lobby and an existing Target and Urban Active Fitness Center.

Documentary filmmaker Zachary Levy will be bringing his first feature film STRONGMAN to the Arena Grand this weekend, running March 5th through the 7th. The film recently took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2009 Slamdance Film Festival.
Zachary will be on hand to introduce the film and participate in audience Q&A sessions after the Friday evening shows, all day on Saturday, and during the Sunday matinees. We recently conducted our own Q&A with Zachary to find out more about the film. [Read More]

The Found Footage Festival made its Columbus debut last March, and they’re back again this weekend with an all-new set of strange and wonderful videos to share. Hosts Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher will be presenting the new lineup at the Drexel Theatre in Bexley, starting at 9:30pm on Saturday night.

This Saturday, Studio 35 is featuring a double-header that starts off with “Best Worst Movie”, a 2009 documentary about the the awful 1990 film “Troll 2″. The second half of the double-header is an actual screening of Troll 2. The special event will feature documentary Director/Producer Michael Paul Stephenson and Troll 2 star Dr. George Hardy for some Q&A, photos and autographs.

The Film Section of the Columbus Underground Messageboard is always abuzz with the latest theatrical releases, and 2009 was no exception. The one movie that stood out in this past year’s reader’s poll was Quentin Tarantino’s long awaited World War II Spaghetti Western, Inglourious Basterds. Released on August 21st, the film featured standout performances by Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz. Melissa Starker, Arts Editor at The Alive, announced on her blog “The Bad & The Beautiful” this morning that she is moving on after 11 years of working for the weekly paper to accept a new position as the Sales and Marketing Manager at the newly revamped Gateway Film Center:

There’s been a few special events that have taken place at the new Grandview Theatre over the past few months, but the official public grand opening takes place tonight. The first film to be shown at the new venue is Everybody’s Fine, a new Robert De Niro Christmas dramedy.
