Catch Up With: Arch City Tavern

When Arch City Tavern opened in the Short North last March, it was with the intention of creating a space where those who loved craft beers and gourmet pub fare could come together. Part sports bar, part Cheers-like watering hole, Arch City isn’t resting on its laurels, but investing in new ventures to keep the customer coming back.

The first of these is brand new windows. When Arch City first opened, the eastern wall was one large window through which customers could watch the Short North go by them. Those windows now open out onto North High Street, creating a patio-like space without all the extra regulations.

Huge windows like these have become something of a trend around the city, especially at this time of year, when the weather warms and any day or night out begins and ends on a patio.

“With these windows, it’s like we’re inviting the neighborhood in,” shares Xhevair Brakaj , owner of Arch City Tavern. “We’re going to be doing some great stuff here very soon, and giving customers the open space, they feel like they’re part of the neighborhood when they’re here, and that’s what we want.”

The other great stuff going on at Arch City concerns food and drink. Chef Chris Anthony and Mixologist Nicolene Schwartz have worked in tandem to create a fresh but flavorful dining experience that rivals any other restaurant’s.

The new menu contains dishes that are intentionally light and bursting with the flavors of Spring time. The Goat Cheese Tapenade is a revamp of their popular Baked Brie shareable plate, featuring cool, whipped goat cheese instead of heavy, warm brie.

Other new choices include a Beets n Brie Salad with both the golden and red varieties, Cast Iron Shrimp, Bratwurst Corn Dogs, a non-greasy take on Fried Calamari, and easily some of the best Grilled Wings being served in the city today.

Drink offerings come from the same idea: familiar cocktails with a gourmet twist. The Old Fashioned #2 uses a spiced black cherry tonic, while the Moscow Mule continues to be made with fresh lime juice and Roake Ginger.

“We work hard here to not only maintain our gastropub voice, but make sure it’s well executed,” adds Chef Anthony. “We listen to what our customers want, and how they want it, so we are always growing, always evolving.”

In the future, Arch City will continue to push the envelope on flavor. With a clear emphasis on seasonality, technique, and presentation, the comfort food scene in the Short North will always have a presence once Arch City’s doors are open.
