From The Dispatch:
Casino in Columbus is part of latest proposal for Ohio vote, sources say
By James NashTwo gambling companies that were on opposite sides of last year’s unsuccessful campaign to put a casino in southwestern Ohio are poised to join forces on a new measure to build four casinos in the state.
The proposal would include a casino in Columbus, likely in the Arena District. The capital city was not included in the previous four gambling-related statewide ballot measures, all of which failed but drew support in areas where casinos were proposed.

Amen.
Jamesm you are so right . but i think everyone has really good points. So it sounds like we can do with or with out it. either way sounds like it wont help columbus that much or hurt much either.
I cant decide
I don’t think I would mind the revival of the race track slots idea. Here in Columbus you have Scioto Downs. Putting casino-like attractions there wouldn’t have nearly the impact plopping a casino in downtown would have.
Yeah, smart infill, smart growth is the way to go.
new to OHIO
Big idea or not it would be a nice addition of things to do in this state…We need lots of options and a casino is much needed in this lacking state..this is coming from a new yorker
another casino ballot issue, more jobs for destitute petition gatherers (what a surly lot that hung out across from the greek church in the SN last time) more money for political consultants and for radio and tv advertising…keep voting no and those jobs will never go away.
One would think “the house never loses” gambling types from out of state might finally figure out the odds are against them and go the fuck away. I can’t image a worse resident for the arena district, want to kill downtown housing, put a casino in the middle of it.
Another argument for the 3C-take the train to Detroit to gamble.
I don’t know what’s really lacking in this state. You have an abundance of spectator sporting venues, no shortage of arts and cultural, a variety of museums, good outdoor recreation spots. Just about every town in Ohio is a college town or in the general vicinity of one which brings it’s own range of options. And you are within 6-8 hour drive of some major places, in case you need more weekend options.
i say no to the casino ……………… arena district maybe that would be interesting but anywhere else it would not last around here
Everyone has already put it so well. A casino would suck in columbus, and putting it in the arena district would suck the life out of that neighborhood when it goes downhill in 10-15 years..
but at least when they tear it down they could put in a nice park surrounded by small businesses. maybe we should just do that in the first place this time :) I’d much rather have a variety of things to do combined with a nice outdoor space than some seedy dirty casino.
Why don’t they do a study on the west banks of the Scioto River on the other side of Downtown. There is a large lot. It would def help Franklinton.
Perhaps they should turn the Santa Maria into Columbus’ Riverboat Casino. Maybe it would become profitable…
Just send that down the river
Destitute petition gatherers. Haha. That’s true. I used to co-ordinate a bunch of them for a job I had. A stranger group of people you’ve never met.
And while they were almost unanimously politically apathetic, the core 500 national petitioners are key players in modern American democracy.
This particular amendment may not come via petitioning though. It may come directly from the legislature.
I really think that casinos get their bad rap simply because they are often put into distressed areas (an idea I don’t like.) A casino in the middle of Manhattan wouldn’t have the same effect, and I don’t think a casino in the Arena District would affect it negatively. In fact, I think it would affect it quite positively.
Then again, I’ve seen good casino installations–like in Windsor, or in Costa Rica.
At the very least, we have to change Ohio law to allow for legal poker tournaments. The fact that playing poker for money is illegal is insanity.

NO! how about it go’s next to you’re home
ETA: It would not help.
I really wonder how many of the casino proponents would be willing to put the thing in their backyard.
I doubt any. But hell lets toss it in Franklinton or some where that has not had a chance to redevlope yet. That makes me sad it really peeves me that people think sure lets put it right their. No! NO
I often wonder of anyone has seen casinos other then the glitz like traveling across states it’s not shiny and awesome it is depressing and sad. The thing is the revenue that would come would hardly replace the stuff that comes with the casino. You will have increases in a lot of stuff and the bad will out weigh the good. I’m not just talking about crime but their is so much more to it.
Apparently city center is the perfect location, since it isn’t a residential area.
There’s no debate. They don’t add a damn thing economically. None. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. A “big” idea or something “new” is the worst reason to do something. There needs to be financial study and real sustainability to city planning, not just something bombastic. It’ll be another City Center. A flop. A piece of crap that sucks local resources.
Please read a bit about casinos and their impact instead of just swallowing the marketing. There is empirical evidence out there that proves a casino would be worthless to the community.
I’ll put a casino in my backyard.
Then again, I live on campus. But I used to live in the Victorian Village and the Italian Village.
Wouldn’t hesitate to have a casino near me.
Keep in mind, I think the economic advantages of casinos are deeply overrated.
But I don’t believe they are zero. I don’t want to be in the last state to legalize it. People will think we’re the state which hates gays and casinos.
