Registration for car-sharing system car2go officially opened yesterday in advance of their October 26 launch date for the Columbus region. On that day, the city will receive 250 car2go smart car vehicles, which are available for shared use for membership holders.

“Columbus is a vibrant city, home to forward-thinking companies which have long driven the city’s innovative core,” says Nicholas Cole, president and CEO of car2go North America. “car2go’s free-floating, on-demand carsharing network will complement existing transportation options to connect residents, students and visitors to the various neighborhoods and events that reinforce the city’s diverse character.”

The car2go “home area” where the service can be used is a 30 square mile zone that stretches from Merion Village to Clintonville and Franklinton to Franklin Park. The car2go vehicles can be located using a smartphone app or calling a customer hotline. Members also have access to use all vehicles in Columbus as well as the other US cities including Austin, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, DC and others.

The car2go system’s launch in Columbus will be the first in the state, and only 12th overall in North America.
