Cantina Laredo Opens First Ohio Restaurant

By: Walker

The Dallas-Fort Worth based Cantina Laredo opened up their first Ohio location today in the Lifestyle Center expansion at the Polaris Mall. According to their website, the restaurant serves “authentic Mexican dishes in a sophisticated atmosphere”.

Their menu (PDF) includes a variety of steak, chicken, and seafood specialities and their website advertises daily specials as well. Prices mostly range from $8 to $12 for lunch and $11 up to $27 for dinner entrees.

  • Noooo, El Fenix!  We got the wrong one :)

  • Did I read it right? Guacamole for $10 a serving of 2-4 people?
TOP SHELF GUACAMOLE=Avocados, tomatoes, red onion, jalapeños, and spices.
Mixed tableside or not, still pricey.

  • The whole menu looks a bit pricey… anyone know if it’s worth it?

  • The first thing that came to mind for me was Abuelo’s at Easton. I’ve only eaten there once and thought it was pretty tasty. A tad more expensive than most Mexican restaurants, but noticeably higher quality as well.

That being said, it was a few years ago that I ate there it hasn’t been enough to bring me back. Good cheap Mexican food to just too easy to come by in Columbus. ;)

  • There’s no tacos al pescado listed on the menu. They could make really decent ones, I’m sure.

The crepes sound really, really good. They would probably be chosen as the “best dish” on Top Chef Masters by the judges, and likely made by Rick Bayless : Apple filled crepes topped with cajeta sauce, Kahlua, GrandMarnier, candied pecans and vanilla ice cream.
Accompanied by some dark Mexican coffee with a shot of Tuaca, this postre would withstand any competition.

  • we had a new mexican restaurant open up here in franklinton called las camperos. its pretty good and much cheaper. isnt nearly as fancy as Laredo. not a fan of abeulos, not at all.

    uhhhh, no

Only authentic mexican food I have found in Columbus (besides those great taco carts) was in a grocery store in Southland shopping center.

  • Yeah, it’s a total rip off of Abuelo’s.  I was trying to think of a Mexican chain restaurant I would really want here, but I can’t?  Fast food is a different story (Taco Bueno and/or Taco Cabana would rule), but for a sit down restaurant we only ate at local places like a CuCo’s.  So I guess I just need one of those families to pack up and move here, lol.

  • Northstar’s guacamole “special” was $9.75 last week and it barely served one person.  I think the size of the portion at Cantina Laredo will be the determining factor of proper value.

  • Having a guacamole “special” when avocados are not in season and pretty darn expensive seems kinda dumb to me.

    It’s a big portion, 3 or 4 avocados if I remember correctly.

  • @Tenzo- Cajeta is a suggested crepe topping in Bayless’ Mexico- One Plate At a Time. And in Mexican Kitchen, he has a recipe for Cajeta-Caramel Crepes.

The crepes are sometimes substituted with tortillas, and are dipped in a hot cajeta and rum mixture, folded, and ice cream is slipped into the fold.

I could see Rick making this with his daughter when she was younger.

Did you train under him? Or was that someone else on CU?

  • I’ve been to a Cantina Laredo in Florida and the guacamole is excellent, and a very large serving.  Three adults did not finish it.  The food is excellent, although it is definitely pricey.  I will visit the new Columbus location, but not when I’m craving Mexican food.

  • I must say, Columbus now has a real Mexican food Restaurant. It`s been years since my time growing up in Texas, and have not visited for six years. I longed for the taste of REAL MEXICAN FOOD, now I have. I asked my mom,How did it taste ?she said like TEXAS. Shure
it cost more but its better than the slop from the El Cheapo`s.

    FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Cantina Laredo of Dallas has opened its 30th location (the first in Ohio) in a new area on the perimeter of Polaris Fashion Place.

The restaurant clearly seeks to avoid offering just another Tex-Mex lineup or cooking heaps of cheap, dull food. The menu features many dishes that are probably firsts for Columbus.
