Can Columbus become a Midwestern fashion capital?

Take a look at the street corners, the sidewalks, the grocery stores. It’s a sea of people in sweatshirts and sneakers, and that casual, Midwest lifestyle is stifling Columbus designers’ best intentions.

Well, so are the makeshift studios they’re working from in bedrooms and living rooms across the city.

But it’s not just quality craftsmanship, training and education, sweatshop-style long nights and promotional efforts that’ll put the city’s designers on the map. Simply put, if Columbus wants to become a fashion capital – and plenty are pushing for it – we’re going to have to start looking more like New York. Or at least shopping a little more local, and with a little more style. Because designers can’t get respect coming from a city of sweatpants.

  • catnfiddle wrote One of these days I will understand the obvious love / hate relationship so many CUers have with “hipsters”.

Honestly, if you’re past 30 and overly concerned with hipsters you should probably see a shrink.

  • Hee hee. That Kenneth Cole outfit looks like the dude is about to rob a bank.

    Which is why I like it…multi-functional! :D

  • Not sure if anyone else uses this (polyvore) but it’s a good way to pull pieces from different sources to put outfits together if you are shopping online. It could also be a good tool for Tigertree. To show how different pieces in their store can work together. It is nice and simple and will link to where the photos are from and what stores/links to buy from.

I use it for fashion wishlists. This is one of my more affordable sets I made

Says the man in the mask.

  • ski masks are the new scarf.

  • You could do worse than Kenneth Cole, but the materials and fits always seem a bit off and the definitively KC pieces are pretty tryhard. Also responsible for some of the worst men’s shoes ever.

And there are a multitude of reasons that a blue pinstriped blazer with a black hoodie is an awful idea.

  • I’ve always thought that the price point Kenneth Cole commands is not in sync with the material quality and construction of what they put out.

I also agree about knee high boots and mid thigh skirts. Basic, simple, functional, and HOT.

Ahh the FMB’s (if you can’t guess what that means PM me because it’s not appropriate for the public) I just got a pair in the mail today in white for my costume this year and was trying them on while reading the thread ~haha~

Took me a minute, but I got it. Ah yes, I’ve never hear them called anything but FMB. In my experience they hold true to the name.

  • Back a little more on topic…….

I was discussing with my friend Larissa this thread and how Co-opwould be wonderful but at this time nothing instant.

We are invested in the idea enough to get started but I thought I’d post here for some suggestions.

We are going to open an LJ community (unless someone can suggest something better) To post different material, trimming, fabric locations that we use and keep it open to other designers and invite them to give their input also. Comments on places (good/bad service, speedy shipping, etc)

Events we are part of, if we need help for those events, General help because maybe someone is better at pounding grommits into leather then someone else, etc.

Also Bulk orders. Like Muslin, drafting paper, butcher paper, sharing a rabbit punch, buttonhole machines etc etc. Mannequins for shows/draping.

Also I need help thinking of a good name for it/this journal/thingie.

Would appreciate only positive criticism on this.

  • great idea, especially the bulk purchasing aspect. i’m often looking for this!

  • The co-op idea is really, really cool. I am a belly dance costumer and it can be tough to get items in bulk and to find the occasional odd piece of equipment!

  • I’d wear those boots and those jeans any day (and probably do).

  • Ok it is nearly 4AM and I couldn’t sleep so I started it

not much there but expect to see a lot more over the next week since I have nothing better to do then work on this and look for a new job to pay the bills ~bling~

  • Anyone know anything about a magazine called – 614Fashion?

  • Hope the blog works out. CU strikes again!

  • Anne wrote Enzo you would look great in that bell sleeve sweater. I love it.

The orange jacket is great too. You have great taste in clothes! And I love that you get inspiration from designers and make things your own. I think a lot of fashion is all about that too. It is something I would like to do more of.

Torn, I am glad you are in Columbus doing what you love. I checked out your shop and you have some really creative ideas.

This thread has been making me think we need our own Sartorialist to showcase all of the great looking fashion that Columbus does have out on our streets, everyday. Who wants to do it? :) Enzo, do you have a camera? I think that is a blog idea that would interest you and you would do a good job with it and it would be fun for you. :)

In my opinion, I think the magazines that do showcase some of Columbus’ fashion could work on improving the photoshoots with their models. They never pull off the desire for fashion for me. The clothes may look nice, but I think the shoots often look kind of goofy. And they are all the same! Stand outside in front of this building, and this building, blah blah boring.

Has someone started the blog yet? My girlfriend from Chicago is here this weekend and we always shop the SN when she is in town and I was thinking it would be perfect time to take pics!!!!!

I really covet that bell sleeve sweater. I need it.

  • Ooops Now I see…sorry. I still need the bell sleeves. :D and a corset.

  • I know the perfect person to make a corset for you, She will be in the Highball also her name is Larrissa.

I can do the sweater for you if you’d like ~lol~

OH and P.S. I will be teaching the CCAD Continuing education class for Beginning pattern drafting and sewing!!!!! I’m taking over the class in the next two weeks and I will continue to teach it. If I can get them to do this I will also be doing draping and advanced pattern next semester.
