Can Columbus become a Midwestern fashion capital?

Take a look at the street corners, the sidewalks, the grocery stores. It’s a sea of people in sweatshirts and sneakers, and that casual, Midwest lifestyle is stifling Columbus designers’ best intentions.

Well, so are the makeshift studios they’re working from in bedrooms and living rooms across the city.

But it’s not just quality craftsmanship, training and education, sweatshop-style long nights and promotional efforts that’ll put the city’s designers on the map. Simply put, if Columbus wants to become a fashion capital – and plenty are pushing for it – we’re going to have to start looking more like New York. Or at least shopping a little more local, and with a little more style. Because designers can’t get respect coming from a city of sweatpants.

looking past the ugly dude and his unwashed hat hair…

those pants look like they’ll last 2 maybe 3 washings. Unless I’m reading that shiney thin fabric wrong. Also has “that 70s” shiny rayon look that just says “please keep me cool or I will stick to my pants”

The sweater looks too tight to be comfortable. Otherwise I have one kinda like it… guineapigs have chewed some holes in it but its cozy.

The collar… really? no. Seriously? Ready for the disco!

Those loafers… I’m guessing a mile on a city street would leave those ready for the trash bin and the feet in poor shape.

  • Are you all auditioning to write the comically inept “fashion don’ts” for U-Weekly or are you really so bitchy in your non-iron Geoffrey Beene steez?

Does it surprise you that not everyone is a sucker who will buy anything some bozo somewhere says is “cool”.

This is what happens when the contrarian kid in school grows up to be 8000 years old. Perhaps you should post a photo of an outfit or style that you find aesthetically pleasing so that I can judge you beyond “lol this dude sez bozo and is hung up on ‘cool.’” I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.

  • Further lolz @ everyone hung up on “THAT MODEL NEEDS A DAMN ARBY’S MELT”

I don’t find emaciated people to be aesthetically pleasing.

I hate looking at chubbos, but you don’t see me shooting them from helicopters. The guy’s not even emaciated, he just has a very particular bone structure and low body fat. The girl’s not looking terribly healthy, but she’s also wearing a ton of make-up. Not all cities grow their children to be pack animals. Learn to love cheekbones.

  • Don’t look at the people….focus on the clothing…they are a prop…a canvas.

Do you like these models better?

As I’ve said before. Clothing needs to be comfortable, well made and appropriate for the given situation.

You’ll notice that, rather than simply being contrarian, I have pointed out in the example that the clothing looked uncomfortable, appeared to be not well made (read that as would not hold up to daily wear), and inappropriate (in the case of that flowery looking collar… Maybe a cocktail party… but not to work).

As for aesthetics, frankly, most things I see folks wearing (with some exceptions) look pretty ok to me. I guarantee if you post pictures of people on the street or in an office around town I would think most of them look just fine. This is likely because most people buy clothing based in large part on the practical criteria and not just something that might look “hip” but is uncomfortable to spend a day in or will fall apart the first time you move.

At the moment I am wearing gunmetal gray Ben Davis work pants, a blue polo shirt, and heavy black work shoes, but my life and job requires more durability in clothes than aesthetics.

  • Concerning the guys outfit. The pant’s are not shiny, they are incredible, though I doubt anyone would pair them with that shirt+tie outside of runway/editorial. The collar is about as not disco as it could be and still have a collar. It’s small with a rounded edge….

Other than that, I think this thread has official entered into not worth it waters…

Yes, and you know why? They don’t look fucking miserable.

Maybe because they are high on sugar, beer and bacon fat…I am sure in the full figure fashion shows they have a droll lack luster expressionless face too.

Have you had a lot of clothes fall apart? I’ve bought things across the spectrum of price and had almost nothing fall apart… “Comfort” is arbitrary and I can’t imagine you have any way of telling the quality of durability of something like a pair of loafers from a zoomed-out runway shot. So what’s your beef?

I would say that it dove head first into those waters around 25 pages ago.

    That’s when it got fun.

  • Because people want to be mean rather than appreciative. I think we should be serious and style out each other. I seriously could see Roland in that swanky pant and sweater layered look even if it is Hugo see everywhere Boss—it is a nice look. The pieces can get mixed with jeans or different shirts or add a vest.

Tigertree if you could post pics from your store and say the people the outfit would look good on, that would be super. Torn Angel, I think I would wear everything I have seen on your website!!! Other women would look good in your work too! I think that would be a positive direction…post pics and who would look good in what outfit.

  • I don’t want to help people because their notions of individuality and identity are tedious and get in the way of my dictation.

  •  You are funny.
