A lot of people think the growing season ends in the fall, and therefore local eating ends there too. I thought the same thing; but it doesn’t. Last Saturday I walked to the North Market to get my groceries and found an abundance of locally grown food from The Greener Grocer and Bluescreek – Apples, Bacon, Carrots, English Roast, Mixed greens (for me = salad mix), Mushrooms, and Potatoes.
Local food isn’t just for summer salads and fall pies. I plan to make a yummy roast in the crockpot using the above ingredients, which says ‘winter comfort’ to me. So look carefully when doing your shopping – in general or for holiday meals – there are still local options, and you don’t have to look too far for them. How are you eating locally during these colder winter months?

Summer before last, the husband and I had a CSA via Clintonville and it was fun, but not something we wanted to repeat this past summer so we just shopped the farmer’s market. We noticed however that Greener Grocer offered a winter market bag and signed up, so far it’s been a-mamzing. This weeks bag feature herbed cheve and a fresh baked baguette that smelled so good it was all I could do to not chow down in the car.
When we went down to Circleville last weekend for a Christmas Tree, we stopped inside the store at the Rhoads Farm Market. They seemed pretty empty (could have just been that day) but their fridge section contained a wide variety of Ohio-raised meats, sausages, bacon and Ohio-made cheeses, dairy, and other products. Lots of local jams and jellies on their shelves too.
Not quite the same as the fresh produce described in the original post, but still lots of goodies to be found all throughout Central Ohio. :D
There are also plenty of winter farmers markets around this year! Pearl Alley, Columbus Winter Market in Clintonville and Worthington Winter Market. You have to plan ahead since the times are limited, but you can get some great local meats, cheeses, and produce (including apples and cider, for the next month or two at least!)

For the ultimate convenience, Oink Moo Cluck (oinkmoocluck.com), my favorite meat vendor at the Clintonville Farmers Market, is doing monthly home deliveries this winter. You can email them your order and they’ll bring it to your house on a Saturday. We really like their whole smoked chickens (only $8. we use the meat in soups or enchiladas, then use the bones for stock) steaks and pork chops & sausages.
