Burgers, Dogs & Fries Coming Soon to Broad & High

By: Walker

The Dispatch reports that Kevin and Lori Ames, owners of Lola’s Cafe and Cinco are adding to their downtown offerings a new restaurant called Burgers, Dogs & Fries that is scheduled to open in September at 20 N. High St., in the space formerly occupied by the Original Soupman.

Anyone else know any more info about this? And will it be able to compete with Dirty Frank’s popularity?

  • Wow. Three restaurants right at Broad & High for these folks. I just wished some of them had extended hours. ;)

Anyway… I’m not sold on the name. Pretty generic. Hopefully the food really stands out. I wonder if they’re trying to compete more with fast food offerings, or if they’re going slightly higher end to compete with Five Guys / Graffiti Burger.

  • I’ve never been really impressed with offerings at Lola or Cinco. They’ve always seemed like decent concepts which are executed on the poor side of average. While it’s hard to screw up a hamburger or hot dog, I don’t expect that it’ll be any competition for Ringside around the corner. And certainly not Dirty Franks.

But, it’s good news that the space won’t be vacant for long. And I know lots of people appreciate the value offered by the other nearby locations.

  • Yeah, what’s with the name? :(

  • To answer the question: yes, as long as they have booze + late hours. How late is Ringside open anyway? Besides, with the mini-Times Square beckoning people to an empty corner, it would be nice to know that you didn’t head that way all for naguht . I’m sure visitors would be happy to know tht there is actually something open there, since it appears busy.

  • I think Ringside is generally only open for after work happy hour. I think they’re closed by 8.

  • Lola and Cinco are ok….you can get a lot of food for pretty cheap I will say that.  They must be doing well if they are considering opening a 3rd restaurant right there, so that is good.

I’m pretty sure Ringside is open later than 8, but I don’t know their hours.

  • Blah – Ringside is terrible. Bad service, expensive poor quality food, and they allow smoking in there.

Excited about another option. I think burgers are missing from that part of downtown. Though for a hot dog, I’d probably find Tawd or just wait till dinner to head to Dirty Frank’s.

  • honavery Says: I’m pretty sure Ringside is open later than 8, but I don’t know their hours.

Til 1am Mon-Sat according to their website.

Anyway, it sounds like this new BD&F venture will most likely just be another lunch spot. I imagine it will do pretty well as there’s really not too many other prominent burger options in the immediate area.

  • joev – have you been to ringside since the new owners took over?  i was never there before the change, i heard it was pretty bad before, but i really enjoyed my stop there recently…

  • Joev, not sure the last time you went to Ringside, but their new menu is pretty good IMO.  The chicken sandwich and fries I’ve had a couple of times this summer are excellent.

  • Didn’t know it changed owners. Maybe it’s better now. It looked like it was circling the drain when I went about a year ago.

  • They will have to work hard to offer a better downtown burger option than Jack’s Diner.  And absolutely no one has a better burger than Five Guys.

  • Regarding Ringside

Yes, it has changed owners. It is very nice now, they renovated the entire place, while keeping the classic bar feet. I was there this past winter and the new owners extended hours. to bar hours.

They intended to make it more of a “tip top” type establishment, the food is improved, and I hope they get a late night/happy hour crowd going.  I haven’t been back since Feb.  Does anyone know if they have kept late night hours?

  • I have had nothing but great experiences at Lola’s- great food at pretty nice prices, plus really friendly people serving it up.  The salmon salad is SOOOOOOO good.  I was just thinking about it today.  Too bad I don’t work downtown anymore :(

I’ve only been to Cinco twice and it seems to be a Chipotle knockoff, but it was okay.  Nice to have variety.

I don’t think this new place will be competing with Frank’s at all- in fact during regular business hours I think it would be the other way around.  Think of how many people work within 150 feet of broad and high, versus how many people work within 150 feet of Frank’s.   Anyway, the more the merrier and I wish them luck on their Broad and High monopoly!

  • Seeing as how I originally brought Ringside into the discussion, I wanted to agree with the others who have said that the new owners have really done a great job in turning the place around. I had vowed never to go again at one point under the old owners.  But then had to meet someone there and wasn’t looking forward to it, not knowing that the ownership had changed. I was really really impressed, the new people seem to be doing everything right.

Either way, as someone else mentioned, it’s a great sign that they’re opening a third location in the area. Means that the other two must be doing well.

  • I hope it’s good.  I assume the name is a working title.  And how about something with a “z” in it?  I expect that from the owners of FreZno, DagwoodZ, and Press GrillZ.

  • Jack’s better get a credit card machine or it may fall victim to this restaurant. Im not one to carry cash, and if Im having lunch at Jack’s I have to remember to get cash. Also, later hours would be nice when i wait for the bus in the evenings.

  • Went by here on High and the storefront pops out at you. So, anyone try it yet? I already had lunch, so I can’t say yet.

And a bit off topic, can Capitol Crossroads do something about that trashy carryout next door? See, this is what happens when you have no design guidelines as a standard for downtown businesses. You get cheap, ugly storefronts that negatively affect the rest of the block. I’m glad C Town took it upon themselves to make their carryout look nice, but it should be required, not optional.

  • Eeeew: crinkle cut fries.
