For the past year, the old Steak N Shake location near OSU has sat empty and boarded up, but that’s about to change. Cincinnati-based Buffalo Wings & Rings has plans to open up several new Columbus-area stores including one in the old Steak N Shake spot.
The other new location is in Lewis Center at the Northpointe Plaza. There are existing stores on Stringtown Road in Grove City and on East Broad just outside 270.
From their press release: Buffalo Wings & Rings is the fastest-growing privately owned franchised chain of restaurants in the nation serving Buffalo-style chicken wings, onion rings, burgers, chicken and salads. Founded in 1988 in Cincinnati, OH, Buffalo Wings & Rings offers high-quality food and a fun atmosphere that caters to families as well as sports enthusiasts.

there wings are good and last I remember not anorexic lol , they had a restaurant on south high street in 98
I seem to recall a Wings and Rings on campus about 15 years ago…?
I am familiar with the south high and Hamilton locations.
Have to say, those Wings and Rings places were/are quite good.
I do like BW3, FWIW. Just think those chickens are awfully skinny for the most part.
Tried the chicken legs one day at BW3. I don’t recommended them at all. Not very fresh tasting.
The Greek Village was there when I started hanging out on campus in the late 80s. It had been there for perhaps 20 years until the acquisition phase (some by imminent domain!) of the gateway project started in about 93-94. It was one of the first local businesses squeezed out. The family that ran the place was rather upset about being essentially forced
the greek village was located between singing dog records and colors on the second floor next to the silver ball. my friend Anna’s family owned that restaurant. Apollos was also there on the second floor with BW3 and skullys on the basement level. apollos has moved up towards 15thish.

So that’s the place I went to at 2 am to get gyros back in the day!! I could never remember the name, but knew it was right by Apollo’s.
Wow, talk about memories. The old Colors, greek village, the old skullys so many memories.

OH that’s right. that was the one there. I got the name wrong.
do you remember the name of the really good greek place that was up around 16th-17th? (that steakandshake took over)? greek kitchen, greek …something…
they had a little ‘arcade’ with 3 old classic (even then) video games in the back by the restrooms.

you know that part of campus is fuzzy for me with the exception of places like world records a few dumpy Chinese places and the pink flamingo. for the life of me i cant remember what used to be there before steak and shake.
I believe that was the gyro place that had the older Greek guy who wore the “Gyro King” t-shirt all the time. If I remember correctly, the gyros were also a dollar when I started going (I think we called it buck-a-gyro).
I now remember the name of the place was “Souvlaki Palace”!

You guys are all, as usual, way ahead of me!
pre insomnia i believe it was waterbeds in stuff, or was that where world records/used kids was?
Bento used to be a radio shack and… something…. then was insomnia/skyline chilli… Bento showed up with the gateway project.
I seem to recall Bento coming in a few years before gateway, then expanding downstairs.. Also, Insomnia was closed for a few years before the gateway came through, no?
The sequence does sound right though..
Let’s not even start talking about the original Firdou’s, cos then I’ll really get pissed…
Waterbongs and Sh*t was, IIRC, on the west side of high street by where magnolia thunderpussy used to be. Just south of 12th ave.
it was also where the pita pit was/is at one point, and caught on fire.
No, I think between Steve’s Ice Cream and Insomnia, it was an OSU t-shirt shop.
Used Kids? It was downstairs from the Pita Pit.

Yeah. I think you’re right.
Used Kids was (as the kids say now) TEH BOMB
ok so not used kids, simply where pita pit was/is.
Used Kids was (as the kids say now) TEH BOMB
I worked there, so I’m pretty sure I’m right.

cool. you probably sold me a bunch of stuff at some point then!
Souvlaki Palace had the best gyros period. I can remember ordering gyro baskets daily(w/fries). The gyros were a little more expensive, like 3 bucks and that sorted out most of the rif-raf. I remember the line being out the door at lunch. George who owned Souvlaki Palace had recently worked at the Buckeye donut shop next to Wendys part-time in the afternoon being friends of the family. His health has weakened and I haven’t seen him there lately. The gyro meat they bought wasn’t as good as the palace. Those were the good ole days. Lee Ross Cleaners sold out to Steak & Shake and I think George fell victim, as between the two spaces they became Steak & Shake. It was a shame, because that was the “start of the end” of the mom & pops on high st.

Buffalo Wings & Rings Restaurants has named two franchise developers who will add to the chain’s presence in central Ohio by opening two restaurants this fall.
The Cincinnati-based company this year opened two corporate-owned stores in the area, at 6325 E. Broad St. on the Far East Side and at 1574 Stringtown Rd. in Grove City. The chain also won the top spot on the “Future 50″ list of fastest-growing chains based on sales, appearing in the July issue of Restaurant Business magazine.
The first new location is expected to open this month in the former Steak & Shake at 1918 N. High St., near Ohio State University. The second will be ready a month later at 8661 N. High St. in Lewis Center, where it will fill the former Roadhouse Grill.
