Buffalo Wings & Rings coming soon to Campus Area

By: Walker

For the past year, the old Steak N Shake location near OSU has sat empty and boarded up, but that’s about to change. Cincinnati-based Buffalo Wings & Rings has plans to open up several new Columbus-area stores including one in the old Steak N Shake spot.

The other new location is in Lewis Center at the Northpointe Plaza. There are existing stores on Stringtown Road in Grove City and on East Broad just outside 270.

From their press release: Buffalo Wings & Rings is the fastest-growing privately owned franchised chain of restaurants in the nation serving Buffalo-style chicken wings, onion rings, burgers, chicken and salads. Founded in 1988 in Cincinnati, OH, Buffalo Wings & Rings offers high-quality food and a fun atmosphere that caters to families as well as sports enthusiasts.

  • I’m gettin’ hungry!

I used to love the Buffalo Wings and Rings on Hamilton Road (Across from Kroger and next to Waterbeds). The garlic sauce was to die for. I went to the new one near Mt. Carmel, and got wings with the garlic sauce, but the sauce was not the same as I remembered (not so sure if it was the sauce, or the millions of variations I have tried since the location on Hamilton Closed). Either way, it IS good to see that B-Dubs will have some nice competition. And I did like the set up, so congrats on the new location. I look forward to eating there!

  • Not a fan of the food but am pleased to know the space is finally being used.

  • Wait – Is Buffalo Wings and Rings different than Buffalo Wild Wings? If so, yikes. I had no idea and have been avoiding Buffalo Wings and Rings because I have had really food and service at Buffalo Wild Wings. An unintentional boycott.

I do normally avoid BW3 (Lane ave) cause of bad service and kinda hard to park near, but on Sunday I went to the BW3 on 5th ave in grandview, service and food was very good, and got to sit on a patio. BW3 on 5th is not very busy at all if you want to avoid crowds.

  • It’s a damned shame the owner of that building kicked the great and successful family owned greek resturant out of that site and replaced it with corporate junk food. If I recall it was a greedy landlord who felt he could immediately double the rent because the ‘gateway’ was going to be built.

I considered it payback that they ended up with a boarded up storefront.

    Kharma’s a bitch.

  • Wait, how long ago was that? I recall the Steak & Shake being there in my early OSU days (98?) and the Gateway must have been in the very early planning phases (if anything) by then, right?

When did that Steak & Shake open?

Also: while Steak & Shake isn’t the most healthy thing in the world, I don’t know if I’d call it “junk food”.

The Greek Village was there when I started hanging out on campus in the late 80s. It had been there for perhaps 20 years until the acquisition phase (some by imminent domain!) of the gateway project started in about 93-94. It was one of the first local businesses squeezed out. The family that ran the place was rather upset about being essentially forced out of business by a sudden huge rent increase with little warning.

my memory is a bit hazy on the dates and specifics, but I used to eat there all the time and I was VERY sad to see the place go. I was very sad to see Insomnia go shortly thereafter.

And yes, IF you get a milk shake, a lunch there is mostly sugar and fat. It may as well be called junk food. It’s very easy to eat more calories at lunch there than most of us are supposed to get in an entire day. That being said, yes it is possible to have a good healthy lunch there, and I do enjoy the food there now and then.

  • Weren’t the Greek place and Insomnia in the space that now houses Bento Go Go?

  • Seems like a nice place for a bromantic meal.

No. this place was up there by 16th-17th where the S&S came and went.

There were two other greek places near the Bento site. One was on the second floor of the building that used to exist between 11th and chittenden, and another one that used to be in the basement level of the same building.

OSU used to have a lot of gyro options! There were like 5 gyro places in the 80s.

The one on the second floor was famous for being the site of a police shooting back in ’88-’89. It was a family business and the wife mostly ran the place. She was being held at knifepoint by some guy who was violently robbing the place for the second time that month. The cop who arrived on the scene reported seeing the guy holding a knife on her throat and attempting to sexually assault her so he fired through the doorway and put a round right between his eyes.

Bento used to be a radio shack and… something…. then was insomnia/skyline chilli… Bento showed up with the gateway project.

I seem to recall Bento coming in a few years before gateway, then expanding downstairs.. Also, Insomnia was closed for a few years before the gateway came through, no?

The sequence does sound right though..

Let’s not even start talking about the original Firdou’s, cos then I’ll really get pissed…

Right. there was a period of time when the acquisitions were going on but the main thing had not started yet. That’s when insomnia and a number of other places were kicked out by “Campus Partners” and their pocket landlords.

That’s also when Mustard’s had their “fire sale”.

  • Buffalo Rings and Wings, or whatever the heck it’s called, has got to be the worst restaurant I’ve ever been too food wise. How do you ruin nachos? How do you ruin chicken fingers? How do you ruin french fries? The location on Stringtown Road in Grove City manages to ruin everything they touch, except the pulled pork. They consistently run out of the pulled pork (I can see why everything else is garbage), we’ve given them a few chances and always totally gross bad food.

For instance, the nachos. We had chewy chips covered in beans and red water (chili?) with some sort of rubber cheese that doesn’t melt. There were giant chunks and strips of lettuce on the pile, so that when you picked one up you got sour cream all over your clothes, table, hands and anything else it could go limp over top of.

However, the pulled pork is worth driving across the country for. Possibly the best pulled pork I ever had. But like I said, they never have it on hand. Good luck!

    +1

the same can be said about almost everything. The intertrons have proved this.

  • Buffalo Wings and Rings.

I remember actually having something there that represented a chicken wing better than BW3.

Where does BW3 get their anorexic chickens?

Not necessarily. What if there was only one person that liked it and blew $25 to $50 million there one big game day eating rings and things.

I like chicken wings… but meh!
