bonoPIZZA Reopens Tonight in New Location

By: Walker

The much-anticipated reopening of bonoPIZZA is finally upon us. Bill Yerkes is opening the doors to the new restaurant at 1717 Northwest Boulevard (near the corner of Northwest and Chambers) starting tonight at 5pm. The new pizza shop is located inside of a carryout store on the corner, and only seats around a dozen people at a time. Fans of the old Short North location will appreciate the intimacy, but opening crowds should be prepared for a wait to grab a seat.

Bill stated that those who purchased the half-priced gift certificates earlier this year to help fund the re-opening will be able to pick them up this Thursday, or have them mailed out.

Hours of operation of the new location will run from 5pm to 11pm, Monday through Saturday.

  • I’m sooooo excited!  *happy dance*
I’ve been starving for Bono Pizza for much too long!

  • Great news and right in the hood for easy access!

  • Yay! Congrats!

  • I stopped by for a tester taster the other day, and Bill hasn’t lost his touch for the pizza or his flair for entertaining.  This may be the most pleasant hidden gem ever… seriously, when you walk in you’ll get it… sorta like a Jim Jarmusch movie… a crazy setting within a crazy setting.  Like meeting Jarmusch at a NYC Pogues concert… weirdly appropriate.

  • Congrats Bill! I’ll have a #2 please :)

  • Oh man, I didn’t get a chance to try bonoPIZZA before they closed their doors. I’m pretty excited!

  • Is it too early to start the death pool for this place? I try not to be a downer, but seriously.

  • joev, yes it is.  This time they aren’t sharing a lease with another business with whom they are in conflict.  In addition, Bill and Peggy live practically across the street, so if they decide to close early but get a call later, they can run over and fire up the oven.

I would like a rolando and a large cup of haterade!

  • Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.

  • This is fantastic news!

  • I think this addition warrants the city of Columbus installing 5th x NW arches at the entrances on NW Blvd, King, W 5th, and W 3rd.

  • Rockmastermike and I just returned from a soul-satisfying dinner at the new place.  We sat at the counter and grabbed a beverage from the convenience store that shares a door with Bill and Peggy (they seem happy to have the business).  It’s a small space, but there’s the promise of outdoor seating when springtime returns.

The new menu has two new pizza offerings; the Hippo and the Carbonara.  The Hippo has a fantastic blend of salty anchovies and sweet tomato sauce.  The Carbonara is patterned after the pasta dish and it is amazing.  Apparently Rockmastermike and I were the first to taste it, even before the Yerkes!

The new dessert is a creme brulee, served traditionally or in a shot glass, depending on availability.  Part of me was amused at the image of Bill with a blowtorch, but the dish is perfect.  I was nice enough to offer my dear husband a bite before inhaling the whole thing.

There is no reason for BONO to go away now that they are settled into their own place and are no longer on a time share plan.  They are in this for the love of the food, and it shows through with every pizza they serve or box.

  • Tonight I had some darned good pizza, and saw a lot of very happy people who came in curious to see what was going on and left as happy new customers.   The new staff were friendly and efficient, the food was good, and the atmosphere was friendly.

BonoPIZZA (and their new Carbonara pizza) is a fine addition to the bacon district.  I look forward to dining at the counter next to the pizza oven on many of the upcoming cold winter evenings.

  • Is there a phone number for call ahead and carry out?

  • 614-906-8646.

  • There were four #2 San Rolando’s delivered to Pierogi Palace (Roland’s) tonight.  Roland gave his approval on the pies.  Thanks to the patrons and staff for not taking any unmentionable photos when I left my camera behind during my first visit.

  • I drove past around 8:15 last night and there was only one car in the lot. (guessing the person that works at the convenience store) Did they run out of pies early again? or just not the same crazyness that was the cart set up over the summer?

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

  • Bill and Peggy, it’s so good to see you two again! The hubs and I got three pies last night: the hulk, the puttana, and the new carbonara. All were wonderful, but the new carbonara ended up our favorite. Just as lovely was the company, of course…those two are a treasure to this city, in my humble opinion. I’m looking forward to many a night bellied up to the bar.

And Vestanpance–Bill and Peggy did a very soft, quiet opening last night. The sign isn’t even up yet. I got an email from him Sunday saying they were quietly opening this week, making a rolling start if you will. You can bet that now the word is out, the parking lot will be packed from here to eternity.

Another great detail–Bill and Peggy once ran a pizza shop out of this exact same location. So welcome home, you two…literally. We’re glad to have you back!
