bonoPIZZA is moving from Short North to Grandview

By: roy

Dear ColumbusUnderground folks,

Today Peggy and I made a decision to permanently close the bonoPIZZA operation on Russell Street. During our time there, we met many nice people and we loved our neighbors. So it took quite a bit of thought to arrive at this decision.

Kent Rigsby owns the bakery where Bono was located, and he was very nice and even helpful to us. But it became apparent that the bakery staff didn’t share his enthusiasm and the shared-space arrangement became untenable for us.

We believe we gave the Short North a neighborhood pizza joint with great food, reasonably priced, and served in the most fun way we could deliver.

We plan to reopen within four weeks in the Grandview Heights/UA area. Our new space will accommodate a wood-fired oven so we can bring you even better pizzas–and a few new surprises. The #2 pizza formerly known as the San Giorgio will heretofore be known as the San Rolando.

Thank you all very much for your friendship and patronage. Bono’s phone number 906-8646 remains the same, so feel free to call us for updates and directions.

We will be at CU’s 7th Anniversary party tomorrow night with our mobile wood-fired pizza cart and look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you all again,

Bill & Peggy Yerkes

  • Come back to us rose and thistle!

    +1000

    I loved that place!!!

  • I just drove past this spot and the other pizza place still has it’s sign up and looks to be running.. did they give you any timeframe?

  • King is a bit of a pain to bike down this way due to poor road design, but it’s closer to the Peach District than the Short North. At this rate, we will soon eclipse the SN and will have to fend off yuppies and their dog bakeries.

 Chambers is pretty decent for biking, very little motorized traffic. NW Blvd is a blast.

  • blammo wrote Not the most foot traffic-y location, except for the nearby apartment community. Hopefully their quality will serve them well as a destination location.

Yeah there are no sidewalks on Chamber and I don’t think on NW either.

  • ah, so sad. i just went to call in an order and heard the bad news. my dad and i stopped in when he was in town and we both loved the place. he’ll be dissapointed to hear bono is no longer just down the street. Unfortunately I tend to stick to places right around me, so I probably won’t get to bono much any more :( Maybe the bike ride won’t be so bad.. google maps says it’s 2.6 miles. I’m not familiar with biking up that way but the post about chambers being not bad to bike on is reassuring. what is 5th like? I’m fairly new to city biking, pretty much have just ridden on neil back and forth to class so far.

5th has more traffic and more lights than King, I generally take King across and you can pick up Chambers (Necco) right after the tracks off King. Sometimes I’ll take 3rd across but the traffic light at 3rd and Olentangy taks forever to change for a bike on 3rd… overall though it’s really not a bad ride from High Street to Grandview

  • 3rd is the least trafficked road with traffic going 35MPH or more. I tend to take a left on Edgehill and just use 2nd instead which parallels the rest of 3rd 5th can have quite a bit of traffic on it (25MPH, but ignored when trafic is lighter) and so might not be too bad, haven’t ridden much of it west of the river, but you’d have to be comfortable riding in the lane since there’s not much room. King gets really wide west of the river and also 35MPH, mostly residential furether down that way. No matter which one, they all have a steady incline to slow you down.

Amen. Coming up from the river + a western wind = I suck at riding my bike sometimes.

I’ve ridden on 3rd across the river many times – it’s not so bad, but you MUST take your lane or there will be pickup trucks going 40 mph one foot away from you. Not fun.

  • thanks for the bike talk all. I’ll have to give it a shot once bono reopens, probably taking King. I’ve been surprised at how nice winter biking is.. it was especially fun today in the snow/ice! I think I may need to start bringing my lab goggles with me though to keep the snow out of my eyes.

  • Bumping this as a request for more information, if available. Something primal in my brain started screaming for a Bianca.

  • The latest word with BONO is that they will reopen during January at the intersection of Northwest Ave and Chambers Rd.

Bill is also putting together something he’s calling BonoTV. He’s installing cameras so that anyone can go online and check out whats going on at the new place. Also talking about hosting all sorts of events.

  • in place of or in addition to that other pizza palace right there at the corner?

  • in addition

    fairly certain about that

Big Brother is watching you… eat pizza!

  • Bill has been showing his ceramic pizza ovens to potential vendors and last week he fired up the wood. So to speak.

I got my favorite #3 pesto-base five cheese with arugula and sausage and it was sublime.

Bill and Peggy are fine and planning for a reopening sometime soon.

  • Does anyone have any updates on the opening? One post said January so just wondering.

    Thx!

  • The plans for Grandview did not work out. Bill and Peggy have said they are hoping to open in March once they find a new place.
