For your consideration

Consider Biking, an aptly named organization that promotes cycling and walking as viable forms of transportation, is challenging the people of Columbus to try life on two wheels for a week.
The launch of a plan to make biking more safe and accessible, a series of ceremonies and presentations and a biking-inspired art show are among the events scheduled for Columbus’ first Bike to Work Week.
But the heart of the weeklong event is the daily commute. Various local businesses are competing to see who can log the most bike trips, and all Columbus residents are encouraged to try riding to work.

For your consideration

just putting fenders on your bike will help out. it keeps the water kicked up from your tires off of you.

\Yeah, I’m grabbing these, and a jacket with hood for over the helmet. I just wasn’t sure about the tried and true methods of staying somewhat dry since I’m new at this.
something waterproof for the feet would probably help too. i got caught after a rain once, it was before i had fenders, and my converse weighed like 5 lbs each because of water accumulation. it was pretty miserable but at least it was warm outside.
edit for grammar.
oh yeah, and YAY Meredith! :D

As National Bike Month plays out in May, Columbus finds itself on a two-wheel roll.
Bicycling magazine recently named the city one of five “future best” cycling-friendly towns in the United States, citing the Bicentennial Bikeways Plan — a pledge of $50 million for infrastructure to accommodate bike and pedestrian routes by 2012.
Consider Biking, a central Ohio advocacy group, is piggybacking on the news with Bike to Work Week.

Definitely get the right equipment. An old raincoat is not a good idea. But inexpensive bike-directed rain jacket, pants, and shoe slip ons are key.
You don’t have to spend a million dollars on some Gortex jacket. I alos don’t like hoods- they hinder your peripheral viaion and with a helmet you may find you don’t even need one.

Yeah I was looking for a jacket as you described. So I wouldn’t need the hood that’s cool. I was thinkin the same thing. Though i’m pretty clueless on this. Any suggestions on where to purchase these bike-directed items.
I want decent quality but I don’t want to go the expensive route either.
A Goretex jacket is the one area worth spending the $$$.
It isn’t about the water getting in – any sheet of plastic will stop that – it is about letting perspiration out. Not being soaked from the inside is worth the money.

Me and you can celebrate National Walk to Work Year.
Hi guys.
Have you seen the coverage B2WW is getting? Pretty exciting stuff.
Well two of the five employees that said they’d participate biked in today despite the wind. Hopefully tomorrow will produce better results.
Happy biking.

Me and you can celebrate National Walk to Work Year.
I walk everyday from Vic Village. And I want a week celebrating it! Who’s gonna help me plan it?

I walk everyday from Vic Village myself and have for years, so I am in.
i really really want to bike to work, but i work in a particularly un-bike friendly part of town. one of the boys who works part time at my store was purposefully hit by a car when riding home from work one day.
i need to come up with a travel route that helps me to avoid west mound street, harrisburg pike and way west broad as much as possible.
I bike from Georgian Heights basically sullivant and demorest downtown, I follow demorest up to broad and broad all the way in. I voted against using w mound or sullivant due to the possibility of getting hit.
the ride in seems fine. their are only a couple places that get my nerves up, but not many.
I ride home the same route seems well lit all the way, I work 2nd shift so this is after midnight.

Does anyone want to join me and my co-workers for this walk? We’ll walk downtown, I haven’t figured our path out yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

mapmyride.com lets you do just what it says – map out your ride. You can choose backstreets, set waypoints, etc. and it will tell you distance and elevation. Pretty cool site IMHO. Uses Google Map technology.
