2009 was a big year for sports in Columbus. Both the Crew and the Blue Jackets made it to the playoffs, Huntington Park opened in April for a record-breaking season attendance for the Clippers, and in August we lost The Destroyers as the Arena Football League went under. None of that stacked up to the continued fandom behind the OSU Buckeyes Football team, which took back their place at the #1 spot in this year’s reader’s poll. Their 2009 season had plenty of ups and downs, but concluded in victory as OSU defeated Oregon at the Rose Bowl at the start of the New Year.

Blue Jackets over Crew? Blue Jackets have been rubbish again while the Crew has been the best team in MLS for the second consecutive season and moved onto the Quarter finals of the CONCACAF (north and central american) club championship picking up the first win by an American team (club or country) in Costa Rica.
No worries Clem. The Crew is just too Massive for this survey.
If I hadn’t seen it here, I NEVER would have believed the Buckeyes would take number 1.
The Crew won Best of 2008 last year. I was a bit surprised to see OSU Football beat them out. I don’t follow football too much, but I thought they had a bit of a rocky season. Or perhaps the “Fire Jim Tressel” thread just threw me for a loop. ;)
Sorry Clem, but finishing the season as the Crew did, it is hard to argue they were the best team in MLS. 1 win, 5 losses and a tie (plus getting bounced in the first round of playoffs) is pretty sorry. Not to mention the worst start for a defending Champion in MLS history. I think Warzycha is leading the team in the wrong direction. Benching your best player in the first playoff game = head-scratcher.
Bengals #10…below the Clippers and the now defunct Destroyers…
reconsidering my subscription…
not to mention the absence of the Reds…
I believe the actual survey question actually asked for best LOCAL sports team. I think some people took creative liberty in extending that to all of Ohio. ;)
Walker, not really rocky at all. Ups and downs, typical of college football, but ending the year with Tressel’s first Rose Bowl appearance…and a victory…and a Big Ten Championship…and a ranking in the Top 5 in the nation?
Pretty good season.
