From the megaplexes to the indie one-screen theaters, Columbus is a great city for movie lovers. Most neighborhoods have a local spot to catch movies nearby, and many non-theater venues also host movie nights and outdoor summer viewing events.

For our 2013 reader survey, we introduced a new category for the best theater going experience, and our readers picked the Gateway Film Center as their number one choice. Located at the South Campus Gateway near OSU, this seven-screen theater hosts a mix of hollywood fare, independent films, cult classic screenings and plenty of other special events.

The GFC will also soon be home to The Torpedo Room, a brand new restaurant concept from Elizabeth Lessner and the Columbus Food League, which will give movie goers another reason to choose this location when picking a theater for their movie-going experience.

Both the Gateway and the Arena Grand are world class urban movie theaters. We don’t realize how lucky we are in Columbus.

The sad thing is that Columbus’ has overbuilt movie capacity to a ridiculous level so many of the locations are suffering. There are something like 184 first-run screens in Columbus, which is absolutely unheard of in an area this size.
