After a bit of a scandal-clad season last year, the OSU Football team rose back to the top of our readers survey as the city’s best Local Sports Team. The Buckeyes closed out their first year under new head coach Urban Meyer with an impressive 12-0 record, though were disqualified from participating in any bowls due to the aftermath of “Tresselgate”.

In a reflection upon the season from back in November, sports writer Corey Barnes wrote: “While it is tempting to wonder how much further OSU might have gone, it is much more productive to appreciate the year that was.”

The Top 6 Sports Teams of 2012:

  1. Ohio State Football
  2. Columbus Crew
  3. Columbus Clippers
  4. Ohio Roller Girls
  5. Columbus Blue Jackets
  6. OSU Basketball

How does a team—OSU Basketball—that spent much of 2011-2012 ranked as #1, and for all of it in the top 10, get beaten out by a hockey team whose top two accomplishments in 2012 was to: 1) get rid of their captain who was signed to long-term contract in exchange for a smattering of B and C-grade prospects; 2) close out the last 7 months of 2012 undefeated?

Quite a few of the “Best of-” rankings on CU have appeared arbitrary, but this one takes it to a whole new level.

We asked our readers who they like. They voted. Sorry you don’t agree with the results. There’s always next year. ;)

In 2011 OSU Basketball had higher attendance rates than anyone on the list other than football. I think the CU audience isn’t really a basketball crowd. Im surprised the Crew, Clippers, or Roller Girls didn’t beat out OSU football knowing this audience.
