Best Local Artist of 2009: Joey Monsoon
Columbus Underground readers represent a community that supports the local arts, and the results of our reader’s poll for best local artist proves that. We’ve compiled a great Top 10 list of independent art makers, and for the second year in a row, Joey Monsoon has found his way to the top of the charts. Joey spent much of 2009 in a studio space at Chop Chop in Olde Towne East and had a big show in October as his Dreamsters Union exhibition opened up the new Ohio Art League gallery space at the South Campus Gateway.

Congrats Joey and all Columbus artists on, and not on, this list. You guys all make this town so much cooler.

Yep, congrats to Joey and everyone else on and not on this list. Columbus is better because of you.

Now that’s just crazy. There’s a ton of other artists that deserve to be on this list including Dan Gerdeman, Stephanie Rond, the rest of my CowBrow family and the ladies of the CAW. Thanks to those that voted, and thanks to Columbus Underground for being so supportive of our incredible army of local artists. Special thanks to Craig and Ashley at Chop Chop, the Ohio Art League and OSU’s Fellowship for Emerging Artists for their support as well. And the biggest thank you goes to my wonderful wife Carrie who in addition to encouraging my art, will soon give birth to our first child and greatest creation.

congrats joey! well deserved and one of my favorite local artists! i’m very honored to be included on this list and am very proud to live in a town with so many fantastic artists, many of whom are not on this list. thanks to all the undergrounders for coming out to so many of the events this year, they would not be successful or nearly as much fun without you:) excited to see the arts scene grow even more in 2010!

It was my favorite opening of the year - and I terribly regret not having purchased a piece. Great news for OAL and Joey

Is it just a coincidence that Joey and Laura were the first and second exhibits at OAL’s new gallery?!? :)
Congrats to everyone. It was a great year in arts!

A great list of folks there and several names missing in my books. I would have expected Stephanie Rond, Dan Gerdeman, Juan Carrera, BJR, and a few other names on th at list. I will say that any name ont he top of that list put in some serious work to deserve the votes as I have seen most of it first hand.
Thanks all that voted and everyone that showed support for the art events promoted here on Columbus Underground. We could not have had the opening receptions and sucess we did this year without your support. Here is to another year of hard work and some great art shows to come!!!

Ryan Orewiler should receive some consideration. His cityscapes are outstanding, as well as his abstracts.

Congratulations to everyone who made this list, and to my friend Joey whose art and passion I have seen grow over the years. We are lucky to have such a great independent arts scene in Columbus.

sorry for the late reply; thank you for voting for me whoever you are.
heres 10 people who are EXTREMELY well respected and known artists not on this list that perhaps you dont know are in columbus, but should (in no particular order):
1. ann hamilton
2. chas krider
3. eric fortune
4. lowell tolstedt
5. jeff smith
6. aminah robinson
7. c.f. payne (technically doesnt live here, but works here)
8. sam fout
9. andrew bawidamann
10. sidney chafetz
many of these artists seem to be consistantly void of local recognition. please let them know you care, or they may move away like so many others.
p.s. pretty sure roman johnson is still around.

Sorry to say Roman Johnson passed away a few years ago…. a great artist and a real character!

Thanks to CU readers for voting me onto the list two years in a row!
I said Jeff Smith and Ann Hamilton last year! :)~
I’d argue that they, Sidney Chafetz, and Aminah Robinson have gotten plenty of love from Columbus. I’ve got to admit that I’m not too aware of who a few of the others on Dan’s list are.
Tolsted was a great teacher and a really nice guy, he’s got a piece permanently up at the main library if anybody wants to check it out.
Luckily, thanks to CCAD and OSU (and other local institutions of higher learning) Columbus has had a lot of great artists pass through or stay for awhile as students or teachers. I know of a lot of artists that are quite successful that got their starts here, but none of them live here now, so eff ‘em they don’t get on the list!

Besides, George Bellows still tops the all time list. Ain’t nothin’ nobody can do ’bout that. Stag at Sharkey’s rules baby! Woohh-woo!
