The best “Hidden Gem” is a new category in our “Best of” series, and it’s a bit of an awkward one. The Top 10 of these best kept secrets was compiled by popular vote. So technically, the more popular they are, the less obscure and hidden they are.
Technicality aside, the list compiled is still a great checklist of “must visit” places around the city that you should make a priority to see in 2011 if you haven’t already. Frank Fetch Park in German Village topped the list, and is a perfect example of a quiet little secret hidden in a neighborhood otherwise known for more popular destinations like Thurman’s or Schmidt’s.
The Top 10 Hidden Gems of 2010:
- Frank Fetch Park
- 83 Gallery
- Topiary Park
- Glen Echo Ravine
- bonoPIZZA
- Scioto Audubon Metropark
- Basi Italia
- Cafe Bella
- Studio 35
- Dodge Park

I just love this park :)
Every neighborhood needs a Frank Fetch Park….and every neighborhood could use a Frank Fetch!
Wow. Where is Hayden Falls on this list? I can’t believe it didn’t make it! It is one of our great, natural hidden gems.
Was this a poll on CU?
KCrissinger – Yes, we had a call for votes open for over a month, and over 900 voters who took part in the poll:

Hayden Falls was one of the places voted on a couple times, but not enough to get it into the Top 10 list. Which I mentioned earlier… technically makes it more of a “Hidden Gem” than Frank Fetch Park at the top of the list. ;)
I’m glad to hear it got votes. It really is funny the number of people that don’t know about it. In fact, a few years ago, I was manning a FoSR booth at a science fair at a UA elementary school. A few peole commented on photos of the falls and asked me if it was a picture from Hocking Hills. They were shocked to hear that it was basically in their back yards….
The installation of the extended boardwalk and observation decks have made it easier to get to. Maybe it will make the list next time.
My friends and I love this park. We stumbled upon it a few years ago, and recently we decided to go again, but we couldn’t remember where it was. We walked all over German Village looking for it, but we couldn’t find it. We finally found it on the second try.
Glad to see Frank Fetch Park topping this list! It truly is a remarkable place that is a perfect example of how beautiful an area can be when the public and private sector collaborate to maintain it. Congrats German Village!
Kudos to German Village Garten Club member Jerry Glick leading the year-round care in collaboration with the City Rec and Parks. FFP is a historical pocket park financially maintained by the Garten Club with thousands of incredible volunteer hours generously given by Club members and Friends of Frank Fetch Park. A former teacher, Jerry has taken this “unmade bed” and inspired many people to take pride in building a year-round entertaining place to stroll through with or without your 4-paw friend. Congrats to Jerry and the Garten Club! cjp
