Best Development of 2009: City Center

By: Walker

2009 was a busy year in terms of urban development projects, so our readers had a lot to choose from when picking one that stood out as the best of 2009. The project that rose to the top of the list was the currently ongoing demolition of the empty City Center mall that is setting the stage for the new Columbus Commons development in the heart of Downtown. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2010 and then fully planted and opened as public park space in the Spring of 2011.

The Top 10 Development Projects of 2009:

  1. City Center / Columbus Commons
  2. Huntington Park
  3. Grandview Yard
  4. The Jackson on High
  5. Neighborhood Launch
  6. The Grange Audubon Center
  7. RiverSouth Development
  8. The Lincoln Theatre
  9. Old North Columbus Streetscaping
  10. The Scioto Mile

  • I am kind of surprised by this. It seems a bit premature. Personally speaking, a lot of chickens have hatched in 2009, this one is still in the incubator.

  • Yeah, it did get a late start in 2009, and it’s still over a year away from being fully realized in the initial greenspace phase, but I think it was voted so highly because of the overall scope of the project. I don’t think anyone would argue that it’s a very significant development, whether or not it turns out to be something we’d all consider the “best”.

Personally, I voted for RiverSouth, which came in 7th place. Another big project that wasn’t 100% started or 100% completed in 2009, but overall I felt was a significant amount of progress made toward the betterment of Downtown. Loads of urban infill, and while none of it was individually a mixed-use building, the various pieces are adding up to provide multiple new functional bits to what was previously nothing more than a sea of ugly parking lots.

Onward and upward in 2010! ;)
