For four years straight, Mayor Michael B. Coleman has topped our reader survey for best civic leader, and 2011 was nothing less than a busy year for the man in charge.
In February, Coleman delivered his State of the City address, that had a core focus on jobs, safety and housing needs. He also showed strong support behind revitalization efforts in Franklinton, a neighborhood in need of a makeover. The Mayor’s office did receive its share of negative attention throughout 2011 with controversy over the purchase of Nationwide Arena and a summer that saw a spike in violent crime. Coleman did get approval to move forward in 2012 with his popular curbside recycling program this year, and went on to easily win re-election in November for his fourth term which will start in January.

It is nice to see some new names on the list…
Yeah, this one changes up a bit, but we might have to change it up for next year as it’s gotten a little stale. Maybe “Best Unsung Hero of 2012″ rather than “Civic Leader of 2012″?
Ugh… Who voted for Matt Ferris?
I am humbled to be on this list on behalf of Team Franklinton – a team that so many of you are on. Thank you all for hanging with us for another year. It’s slow going but this is good work and we’re moving forward!
I could say so much about the work of the other people on (and not on) this list but I’ll just say this one thing: Michael Wilkos is my hero! If you care about this city and you’ve talked to him for five minutes then he’d be your hero too.
