Benihana coming soon to Polaris Fashion Place

By: Neil Jaye

The wildly popular restaurant chain, Benihana, is slated to open their first Columbus restaurant in the Columbus area at Polaris Fashion Place. It can be argued the Benihana kicked off the Japanese restaurant craze we’re seeing now. I do not know when they are scheduled to open their doors, but the building is up and looks fairly close to being done.

The building and some aspects of the interior is definitely in not great shape, and when Kobe opened out at Easton, they raided away most of Fujiyama’s best cooks, but it’s still my favorite, and not just for sentimental reasons – the food is good stuff. Their salad dressing might as well have liquid crack in it, it’s crazy addicting.

If you want new & shiny, Kobe’s not a bad pick, but it’s also very freaking expensive. Ichiban and House of Japan aren’t bad either… I wasn’t especially impressed with Genji, but it was OK. “Japanese Steakhouse” in the Short North was pretty bland.

My theory for years now is that no one who actually lives in the Short North eats at the Japanese Steakhouse in the Short North. Almost everyone I know who likes that place is either from the suburbs or outlying small towns.

I’ve never been there, but co-workers go for birthday parties and such.

…and lots of convention-goers… but, yeah, I can’t say I know anyone in the greater downtown area who has actually gone there.

Besides the frustrations from the limited hours at “Japanese Steakhouse”, once I actually made it there when they were open, I was disappointed. I do give my approval to Kobe and House of Japan though, but I wish there was something like that closer to downtown.

    Maybe I was the first.

nah I to have been there way too much for co-workers birthdays etc. It’s icky and I have never had a ok experience their. Also every time they ask if i want that nasty odd looking orange shit on my food I politely say no and somehow they miss that and put it on there anyway

  • There is another Japanese Steak house opening up on Polaris east of the mall. In the strip on the North Side right beside the Rusty Bucket. Cant remember the name, but they have had a sign up for a couple months. That puts 3 of them there within a mile.

    Do you mean roe?

  • I like Japanese steak houses for special occasions, but I can’t think of Benihana without thinking of this ridiculousness:

Well if that is what that glob of jiggly yellowish orange fat looking stuff that has no flavor then sure :D it’s effin nasty. But I always end up with it covering my food. But I am not sure of the name of it

  • maybe that’s the yum yum sauce

  • I like the dressing they put on the salads

  • i think it’s basically mayo, the yum yum that is. the ginger sauce, I’m not sure what’s in that.

  • On a budget? Go to House of Japan for lunch and get the Imperial Feast for two. You will get a lot of food for $20.00. Can’t beat the price!

Imperial Feast for Two ($20.00) Includes:
    Tea or Soft Drink
    Shrimp Appetizer
    Salad
New York Strip Steak and Chicken
    Orange Sherbert

The nasty glob is called Egg Yolk Sauce. I don’t know how people eat it. It has such a bland flavor and strange texture.

  • The “nasty glob” (egg yolk Sauce) is fantastic. It’s like a nice eggy homemade seasoned mayo that’s steamed on top of seafood.

Now that I’ve offended everyone with my heathen tastes, I’d like to say that my favorite Columbus hibachi/teppanyaki joint is Shi Chi on Sawmill (in the same strip-mall as Trader Joe’s.)

The House of Japan’s at the various malls are consistent and tasty, yet overpriced and a bit boring.

The short north hibachi I lack a bit of experience with, but they have the neat wooden bench tables and 80s decor and did a good job of a parental birthday, sending an old japanese man out to pass out percussion instruments and render a bizarre song.

Fujiyama on Cleveland has amazing decor, including both a wooden bridge over a stream and cocktail tables in the bar made of aquaria with live fish inside. A subdued, colonial-japan influenced version of fern-bar tiki mixed with scareface-style 80s lavishness prevail. Too bad the chefs are bored central americans and the food is substandard. Waitressing is done by full-on geishas last I checked. An exotica time capsule in a shit neighborhood. (Like Otani, which is about three blocks away.)

I’ll probably check out Benihana shortly after it opens. Colonialism makes for good chow.
