Mayor Michael B. Coleman is convinced streetcars carry economic benefits because he has seen them succeed in cities such as Portland, Ore.

Shoppers, drivers, diners and drinkers are among the people most likely to pay for a Columbus streetcar line that Mayor Michael B. Coleman officially endorsed yesterday, two years after he first raised the idea.

It would cost about $103 million to get electric streetcars started on a route along High Street, from the southern edge of Downtown to the Ohio State University campus, Coleman said. It would cost about $4.5 million a year to keep them running.

And at least three-quarters of the money would come from a zone that extends three blocks to either side of the line, covering “people who work and play” Downtown, in the Short North, in Victorian and Italian villages and in the University District.

  • This photo was just emailed to me from the Mayor’s Office with a note:

“Here is a photo of the streetcar style envisioned by Mayor Coleman.”

  • is these things rail cars or are they those magnetic ones?

No need for magnetic when your top speed is around 30 mph.

And that picture made me drool on my keyboard a little.

  • Can it please not be scarlet and grey?

  • And it’s scarlet and gray.

  • I think it’s appropriate…time for OSU to be physically and mentally linked to downtown. Face it folks, we can’t divorce OSU’s image from Columbus’.

  • I think we run the risk of being known only for OSU. While OSU is an important part of Columbus, it is not all Columbus is about. I’m super thrilled about the streetcars, but I’d like to see something new and creative with their design.

  • It looks more like Slate and Cherry to me. ;)

  • I guess I’m OK with it as long as the front doesn’t say GO BUCKS instead of the next stop.

City leaders planned to discuss a plan to bring streetcars to central Ohio at a meeting scheduled for Thursday evening.

The proposed electric streetcar line, which would cost more than $100 million, would run from the Campus Gateway to downtown Columbus, 10TV’s Patrick Bell reported.

A study by the Danter Group showed that a streetcar route in downtown Columbus would attract millions of dollars in new economic development within five years of opening. It would bring 3,000 new jobs, 90,000 new visitors to the city and add 300 new hotel rooms.

If passed, fares would cost up to $1.50 and the cars would operate in 5-10 minute intervals during 17 hours of the day, Bell reported.

Construction on the project could start by 2010.

If I was a betting man I would guess the hours would be 6am-11pm. 3am would be sweet!!!!

I wouldn’t bet on it. Even Paris’ Metro shuts down at midnight. Although, if we can avoid a transit union, then we might have a shot.

    I agree with Walker.

OSU Scarlet is RGB: 153, 0, 0 and OSU Gray is RGB: 153, 153, 153.

The red and gray on the street car are clearly 197, 29, 26 and 62, 74, 72.

These are not scarlet and gray.

  • PODFIVE – you just made me spit my water out a bit, you’re cracking me up.

Well this is fantastic news – good to see you’re on the fast track for information Walker (pun totally intended). This has brightened my day for sure.

  • PodFive: awesome.

My unscientific version was going to be “I’m looking at my OSU sweatshirt and this photo, and the scarlet and grey definitely don’t match.” :) But I like PodFive’s more.

Also, why exactly would scarlet & grey be worse than the done-to-death red, white, and blue of COTA? Not that I have any problems with identifying with America generally instead of Columbus specifically, but I think Brewmaster is right. OSU’s image and Columbus’ are linked, and there’s no sense running from that. Also, connecting OSU and downtown in a visible fashion has a lot to be said for it. (Hence my support for the notion of scarlet & grey arches coming south from campus that stop where the black ones of the Short North begin. Similar theory, despite the completely different idea.)

  • why does the streetcar appear stationary while the background appears to be in motion. it is some sort of sub-space anomoly?

It’s what happens when a photographer drags the shutter and pans to follow a moving object.
