Several years ago, there was a bit of public debate about the validity of the presence of locally produced beer and wine at the Ohio State Fair. Opponents said it would detract from the family friendly atmosphere while proponents argued that it would showcase a product of our state’s agricultural system in addition to providing an additional revenue source for the fair.
That discussion was put to bed quickly when Governor Strickland struck down the proposal.
But with a new administration in charge, the discussion is being reversed. Yesterday, the Ohio Expositions Commission unanimously approved plans to showcase Ohio breweries and wineries in a specific locations at this year’s Ohio State Fair.
“This year, Ohio Quality Wines (OQW’s) will be available for purchase in the Taste of Ohio Café,” said Alicia Notestone, Marketing & Public Relations Director at The Ohio Expo Center & State Fair. “During adult concerts only, Ohio beer and OQW’s will be available for sale in the Celeste Center.”
No alcohol sales will take place outside of those two locations, and fairgoers will not be permitted to take beverages outside those designated areas. Additionally, the number of drinks per customer will be limited.
The selection of local beers and wines has not yet been determined, as the application process is still open.
“Ohio wineries with Ohio Quality Wines (OQW’s, produced with at least 90% Ohio-grown grapes) and Ohio breweries are invited to submit an application to the on-grounds licensee, Concessions by Cox, to provide beverages at the 2011 Ohio State Fair,” explained Notestone.
The addition of local beers and Ohio wines is expected to appeal to new demographics, and may potentially increase attendance which fell to 812,237 in 2010, down from 1,011,331 in 2003.
“We’re celebrating Ohio, and think that the Ohio State Fair is a great venue to promote Ohio businesses,” said Notestone. “Ohio breweries and wineries will have the opportunity to highlight their products and educate consumers about what is produced right here in our home state this summer.”
“Of course, we will continue to work with the Ohio Highway Patrol to maintain the Fair’s family-friendly atmosphere and ensure fairgoer safety,” she added.
The 2011 Ohio State Fair takes place July 27th through August 7th. More information can be found online at www.ohiostatefair.com.
