Bakery Gingham at 189 Thurman Ave.
It’s been five years since Amanda Hanna has been offering her wonderfully sweet treats in Columbus. Starting out in the little spot next to Brown Bag Deli (now Jeni’s), Hanna’s company grew to a retail location in German Village and then another in the Short North. In that time, she also married and recently had her first child, Chance. Now that he is here, Hanna’s priorities have changed and she is closing the bakery to focus on raising her son.
“Motherhood has changed me in ways I never imagined,” shares Hanna. “I want the best for Chance, and for me that means giving him my 100%. Owning a business is hard, time-consuming work and I didn’t want to run the bakery on a part-time basis.”
Hanna will be closing the bakery in two phases – beginning August 7th they will have limited retail hours at the German Village location on Thursday through Saturday, and will still be accepting custom orders. September 1st will be their last day. The Short North location closed on July 1.
Bakery Gingham will continue to honor Groupons until the space is closed. They will also finish their commitment with booked weddings.
Closing her bakeshop is bittersweet for Hanna. She credits the love and support of her husband for making this transition to a new phase of her life possible.
“I will certainly miss the clients,” she says. “I have met some wonderful people over the past five years. I will mostly miss our staff and the camaraderie at the shop. We have built a little pseudo family within the bakery and I have certainly made lifelong friendships.”
Hanna’s bakery manager and head cake designer Kelly McCullough has plans to start a home-based cake business – Kelly’s Cakery.
Best of luck to everyone who made many occasions special! Bakery Gingham will be missed.

BOO to see them closing! :(
But it sounds like Amanda has a good reason. ;)
Very disappointed to hear. They provided our wedding cake when my wife and I were married last December. Instead of saving the top layer of cake, we were planning to just buy a couple of cupcakes on our 1st anniversary. Looks like we’ll have to make other arrangements, even if that means just freezing cupcakes for a few months.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Bakery G has the best frosting height to frosting quality ratio in my hood!
Best wishes for your family!
Wishing you and your family the very best, Amanda. Thank you for five years of sweetness and inspiration. You will be missed.
My tummy and the neighborhood will surely miss you! Thanks for all your support and encouragement over the last few years. I am happy that you are enjoying motherhood so much. Best wishes always!
This is sad news indeed. My wedding cake/cupcakes were from Gingham. The staff were easy to work with and all my guests loved the cupcakes!
I’m hesitant to write because I’m the first opinion in strong opposition to the supportive comments above.
I’m very surprised that BG has even existed in any single location as long as they have. The product is less than I would expect in a singular niche product.
Not going to miss you BG, I’m just surprised that you’ve waited this long to exit the food scene in The Cbus.
Oh this is sad, but I am glad its for a good reason! We ordered our wedding cupcakes from this place and everyone loved them!
riosig79 – I don’t think you understand what a bakery does, but glad your so happy to see things close. Weird response.
