  • Pistachio is just ridiculously good.

  • And I love how cute their shop is.

  • I dunno about City Barbecue; I’ve been to the one in Reynoldsburg and wasn’t super-impressed.

  • I’ll second that on City BBQ. I have a few friends that swear up and down that it’s the best BBQ in town, but the few times I’ve had it I’ve never been overly impressed. It’s OK, but I’ve tasted too many good homemade recipies to claim that City BBQ is THAT good…

  • Actually, if you want real soul food/BBQ, there’s a place in the hood over by me…

G&J Express on Whittier, just past Parsons (the “wrong” way). Went there the other night, got some ribs, greens, macaroni, etc. and all of it was VERY good…and super cheap.

  • I’ll have to add Nanak’s Sweet Shop in Bethel Center (I think that’s what it’s called, the sign for strip mall has bright green lettering). Excellent cakes available in single portions. The chocolate cake with chocolate ganache is great for chocoholics like myself.

  • I’ll join in on the City BBQ doubters-club as well. Most of my friends are obsessed with the place, but it’s never done much of anything for me – even in restaurant BBQ I’d rather opt for Hoggys, Damons or Smokey Bones.

  • Maybe we just need to get it via mail order?

City Barbecue was listed by Chile Pepper magazine as one of the nation’s 10 best bets for BBQ by mail, joining joints in Kansas City, Memphis and other, mostly southern locations. The Columbus-based chain has offered the mail option for about a year.

Hrmm… might have to check that out. Sounds pretty good. I have a lot of family in Alabama, so I’ve been eating good southern food my whole life. ;)

Anne found a place online over on the Near East Side, just east of CSCC that serves up cajun food, but we haven’t gone to check it out yet. The reviews made it sound pretty good.

Whoaa…I can agree that CityBBQ isn’t all that – but I certainly can’t agree that Damons or Smokey Bones is better, yack! (Never had Hoggys?)

  • Hoggy’s, at least back when it was still the one giant barn location out by New Albany, was great…no clue if it’s still good after the chain effect.

  • I’d take Damon’s over City BBQ as well, though I wouldn’t take Smokey Bones based on the lone experience I’ve had there. It’s pretty fair to call me at least a semi-regular at Damon’s, however.

I thought the original Hoggys was the little rinky one on 161 in Worthington/Linworth?

I think they’ve gotten at least a little bit better since then, food quality-wise. I don’t think the “chain effect” (if there even is one) has hurt them at all.

I’m not a huge fan of Smokey Bones – it was pretty “meh”, but I still thought the food there was better than the mediocre stuff at City BBQ. I’ll admit there could be some bias in my part of rebelling against the obsession my friends have with the place though. As for Damons, I have no complaints food-wise at all, I enjoy me some Damons, and if not for the recurring horrible service I have there, I’d probably go even more often.

I thought the same thing too, but I never looked it up to see if that was true or not…

  • Maybe so, but I started at the one WAY up north there in the big barn building. Either way, it was the early stages when they were far from a “chain” and it was still phenomoenal. Ate at the one on Bethel eventually and lost all interest.
