The new school year officially starts up at Ohio State today, and there’s plenty of new things to be found on campus for students and non-students alike.
One of the largest new facilities on campus this fall is the newly renovated Thompson Library, which includes a vast array of study and research spaces. Another big renovation project includes the former Holiday Inn on Lane Avenue, which just reopened as a new dormitory building. The Ohio Union building still has another 8 months until completion though.
Internally, there are always plenty of new courses and classes to be found, but most significantly, the popular City and Regional Planning minor has become a major degree offering. Environmental Engineering is another new major being offered for the first time.
Some of the off-campus additions include the new art spaces taking shape at the South Campus Gateway, that will offer students a chance to easily connected with the local art scene in Columbus. The new #21 COTA Bus Route is also a new addition that will help students to access late night weekend dining and entertainment options in the Short North, Arena District, and Clintvonville neighborhoods.
Welcome back, students!

I’m currently sitting on the top floor of the newly renovated library in the reading room. I has quickly become my favorite spot on campus. The views are beautiful.
I forgot that it’s also the first day of class at CSCC too, and they just had another record enrollment. ;)
As well as record traffic issues…
I had no issue getting on CSCC campus today and finding a space within 10 minutes around 9-9:30. There are some secrets to finding space..but I’ll never tell. ;)
If anyone is looking for a business opportunity, a quick service food concept would probably do well given the lack of available options in the immediate CSCC area. Or buy a parking lot and start a valet service…
Well, the new convenience store at CCAD is now open. Located in the ground floor of their new dorm building on Cleveland Ave between Gay & Long. It’s open to the public. I haven’t stopped in yet, but snagged a photo of the sign out front (below). With a quick glance it looked like they had everything from snacks and drinks to cleaning supplies.
I visited the renovated OSU main library for the first time yesterday, and was completely amazed. I spent about twenty minutes walking around the different levels with my mouth wide open. Just couldn’t believe it all, especially compared to it prior to renovation (I spent many-an-hour putting off my master’s thesis in the library years ago).
Seriously, whether you’re an OSU student or not, take a nice fall afternoon to stroll around Mirror Lake and the Oval, then go read a book in the library. It’s sweet.
The new Library is amazing, and the ribbon cutting ceremony is happening today! Tours and light refreshments throughout the building.
CSCC already has their own convenience store. I’ll have to take a walk down to CCAD when I have the time. Probably pretty much the same offerings as the one on CSCC campus.
I just miss OSU-main and the options along High (especially Buckeye Donuts for the early classes) for those odd days. East side downtown between KLD and the Broad and High area needs some love. With record enrollments the CCAD/CSCC region might not be a bad place for some to consider.
You’re talking about the CSCC shop in the bookstore? I’ve only been in once, but I think the CCAD store looks a little more well stocked for the students who live on campus there. Or at least that was my walk-by impression. I’ll have to stop in too next time I’m walking by. It’s right on my path when I’m walking between home & downtown, which is pretty nice for me.
But yeah, otherwise I totally agree. There’s boatloads of people around CCAD/CSCC all day. The lack of businesses in the area is pretty amazing. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the schools own a lot of the land around them, and there’s no room for developers to build anything?
That is the only thing I can really think of. There doesn’t seem to be much available land in the immediate area that would offer the same convenience as High St. Food options aren’t too bad. Hot Dog cart with some variety, the store/coffee stand in the book shop with snacks and sandwiches and the cafeteria. The cafeteria itself isn’t bad with decent variety, including daily rolled sushi. Just seems like there could be more in that area given the amount of people.
I think this area also has a bit of an advantage over the OSU drag in that your market spans a wider age demographic. OSU is mostly the 18-24 crowd and while you still have that at CSCC/CCAD, you are seeing a greater number of adults returning to college expanding the potential. Probably the biggest boon to that area would be a true coffee shop where one could settle in before or after class for some book time. Really don’t have a good comfortable place for that.
And I’m sure the CCAD store is better stocked given the difference in demographic-residential vs. commuter.
