Officials from the Grange Insurance Audubon Center celebrated the groundbreaking for a new facility Tuesday with an Earth Day tree planting.

The 18,000-square foot center, located at Scioto Audubon Metro Park on the Whittier Peninsula, is expected to be completed late spring 2009.

The facility will include a multi-purpose room, library, bird viewing area, nature store, volunteer space, and be within a five-mile radius of 112 schools. Other attractions the center will feature are gardens, a nature playground and an outdoor amphitheatre. Amenities on the about 80 acre Metro Park will include hiking trails, a bike trail, ponds, wetlands, a boardwalk, a riverside boat ramp, and public picnic and fishing areas.

  • Very exciting, just hope it’s well connected to the city and easy to find with signage and whatnot.

  • Just take a look at that photo. Looks like it will have ample parking lots next to it.

  • Does anyone have an overlay or map of the peninsula that shows what goes where? I’ve heard all these proposals (Audubon Center, park, condos, boat ramps, golf course, etc.) and can’t visualize what goes where. :?

BTW – I am very excited for this one! :D

  • There’s a lot of info located here, but it’s all still just proposals and sketches. They’ve run into a pretty large barrier with cleaning up the whole peninsula, so it may be awhile before we see anything other than the Audobon Center happening down that way.

  • I just hope they do a good job of extending the running trails along the river through there. Proper lighting for safety and a water fountain or two would be helpful as well.

  • Yeah, I can’t wait for this redevelopment – or sort of re(un)development to occur here. As much as I like bicycling on the road for transportation a nice lazy ride up and down the bike path is great for a weekend activity and this extension would be awesome!

For at least four days a year, the sun will be as important as birds or the rain at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center on Whittier Peninsula.

The center, which will be under construction soon, has a design feature in the roof that will create an indoor sundial. Four days a year — the winter and summer solstices and the spring and autumn equinoxes — the sun’s rays will strike a disc embedded in the floor.

The sundial is more than a conversation piece, said Michael Bongiorno, lead designer for DesignGroup, the architect of the project.

“It’s a teaching tool for people to understand that the sun affects your building a different way each day,” he said. “By working with the sun, we can reduce our reliance on technology for cooling and heating buildings.”

  • That sounds great. I am glad to live in a city where this kind of architecture is happening. Can’t wait to see it finished.
