At Home: Clintonville Renovation

By: Anne

This month we go to Clintonville to take a look at a home renovated by Jerrod Wagner. The house was originally built in 1930. It is 1240 square feet, with three bedrooms and 1.5 baths. It also boasts a nice sized backyard and a two car garage. He bought the house last September with the intentions of renovating and reselling it. He has lived in the house while he was renovating it and recently, the house was sold. The house was originally a split level home, so he redid the layouts of most of the rooms, he exposed the brick on the fireplace, he repaired much of the roofing, redid tile work, added a breakfast/wine bar, kept the clawfoot tub and also kept the original hardwood flooring. He did the drywall, trim and paint work himself and used contracted help for the rest. He also worked along side the contractor to learn and hopes to do more renovation work on his own in the future. Keep reading to see the before and after photos!

  • This house was owned by CMH Gourmand’s dad.  It was absolute wreck to the point where it could not even be listed in the market..  Jared and company did a great job on this house.  There are a lot of interesting stores to go with it such as the night my dad almost shot Jared and the during the big windstorm a giant tree missing the house by inches just before all the paperwork was completed.

  • And I forgot – because it was a split level – there was a shower in the kitchen area….

  • Wow, awesome job!  Great before and after pics!

So, CMH Gourmand, your father owned this house?

  • Awesome job.  Is the exterior green or grey?  I’ve always wanted a grey house.

  • Translation:

It was an absolute wreck to the point where it could not even be listed in the market..  Jared and company did a great job on this house.  There are a lot of interesting stories to go with it – such as the night my dad almost shot Jared and during the big windstorm a giant tree missing the house by inches just before all the paperwork was completed and the house became available for Jared to save.  My dad now lives in Honduras.

  • The ability of cooking eggs while taking a quick shower was what really sold me on this place.  But after many of nights and thoughts I decided that a kitchen shower was more of a personal luxury and not something that would help resale.

Anyway, thanks to the Ellisons for helping out, and I hope Jim is having a great time in Honduras!

  • excellent work!  i may be PMing you with some questions about our continuing renovation over in Whitehall.  if you dont mind.

  • Thanks, feel free to PM me.  I’m not an expert at all, I relied on help from my family members and contractors along the way.  But I’ll try!

  • I have a friend in Olde Towne with a shower in his kitchen.  I wonder when and why that was a good idea.

  • where theres plumbing, build a shower!

  • Congratulations on the resell so quickly. Kitchen and other renovations look great. As an inveterate house looker (once looked at 60 condos in three days) need to correct something. You bought in a duplex, not a split level. In a split level you go up a half flight to bedrooms and down half to garage/basement. Very 50′s and few in the older sections of Clintonville.

  • Thanks, I will no longer call it a split level!

Btw if anyone is looking for a fixer upper like this, my realtor/broker, Phyllis Wagner,  is really an expert at investment housing.  Give her an email or call at 614-578-1979 or phyllis.wagner@gmail.com.  Columbus Native her whole life, and truely appreciates the value in older homes! Check her out.

Also, Keith Moore of Moore Home Improvements helped me out a bunch.  He is very aggressive and looking to get into more projects like this one, feel free to contact him at 614-572-1441.

so would this be considered spamming a message board? just a bit maybe….sorry
