Arena Football League officials on Monday announced the suspension of the 2009 season as the 16-team league works on a long-term plan to get back on its feet.

Directors of the New York-based league met via conference call Sunday night and approved the suspension. Jim Renacci, president and general manager of the Columbus Destroyers, has been tapped to lead a restructuring.

“On behalf of the Columbus Destroyers, I am disappointed we had to suspend operations but believe it is the proper decision at this time,” Renacci said in a statement. “We, along with other professional sports leagues, are experiencing the worst economic times in over 30 years. As a league, we now must start to build a solid economic plan and we will begin to develop that plan in the next 24 hours.”

    The people who work jobs at and around Nationwide arena during the game.

    It’s not a surprise, but another loss of revenue for the city.

  • They’ll likely spend their money on other forms of entertainment. Assuming, of course, AFL fans still have money to spend on entertainment.

  • I was actually planning on going to my first game this season. Apparently I will have to wait now. I hope the team will remain here after the kinks get worked out.

  • He givith and then takith away. This is very disappointing but somewhat expected. I enjoyed the games I went to and hope their back for 2010. At least the general manager and president of the Destroyers has been given the task to map out the future of the sport. It makes it more likely that the Destroyers will stay in Columbus once the league gets going again.

  • I was also a bit surprised that a few big names or investors didn’t come forward to save the season….I guess that says how bad things are getting.
