Arena District Restaurants Pin Hopes On Blue Jackets
Friday, October 17, 2008
Restaurants and bars in the Arena District are hoping a winning Blue Jackets team will improve what has been a dismal year for business. The worsening economy has thinned the crowds dining in the downtown entertainment district.
“Everyone is claiming 15 to 20 percent loss over last year,” said Brad Thacker, general manager of the Frog Bear & Wild Boar. The Blue Jackets play their first home game of the season Friday night, and Thacker can’t wait for hockey fans to come through his front door.

Seems like the competition in the area has really ramped up in the last few months for the places like Frog Bear that have been there for awhile. The R Bar just moved and is getting bigger, the Garage Bar opened this summer, the Big Bang Piano Bar is coming soon, Callahan’s opened not too long ago, and Bar 23 and Eleven both opened on the cap relatively recently. I imagine Boston’s would be an option for people to go grab a beer at as well.
I can’t imagine every place is going to have stellar sales all the time.
Home opener tonight! Win or lose it’s gonna be a great game and a fun time.
I’m sure there will be some hungry and thirsty folks dropping some bucks in the many fine establishments down that area, and even some of the not so fine ones.

I can’t wait for the game. I wish that R Bar was going to be open, gotta love the $1.50 beers. I heard that Boston’s has $2 beers for Happy Hour. That will be a must before the $9 beers inside.
I’m psyched! We’re going to try for the $10 green seats. . .
I didn’t realize Boston’s was a restaurant that served beer etc., I am definitely going to check it out!
Let’s go Jackets!
I’ll have to check out a few places here, but it’s not really my scene.
I’ll be at the game tonight too! The Garage bar, which is right across the street from my favorite cheap parking lot, has $2 happy hour until 8 PM! It is in the spot that used to be Adobe Gilas on Vine west of Typhoon/the North Market.
Keep in mind: The Clippers season should get going just as the NHL regular season comes to an end. Since the Clippers play substantially more home games than the Jackets, I’d think anyone who can survive the winter will thrive come April and the longest “off-season” for the neighborhood will be part of September and October.
this game is crazy so far.
both teams have now managed back-to-back goals only a few seconds apart.
Looks like it’s going to be a pretty good season for the Jackets.
I know folks that work down in that area that have been talking for a few months now that something needs to happen in order for businesses to stay open. Hopefully the hockey season will be enough to push through winter into baseball season. that will be a very sad area if businesses have to close doors.
