Soon, students can add another restaurant to their checklist of places to eat. A new Sonic Drive-In is under construction on Olentangy River Road, and will open its doors 6 a.m. Oct. 27.

Sonic is a drive-in food chain where customers can pull up to a parking spot, choose their meal at an order station and have a bell-hop in roller skates bring each order on a tray. There is also a drive-thru and patio seating.

The new Sonic will be the ninth to open in the Columbus area in the past 18 months.

At the new location, the drive-in has been customized to represent an OSU atmosphere. Hillwertz said the structure’s support poles are usually painted green, but are scarlet to represent OSU colors. Instead of yellow, red and blue alternating outfits, employees wear a scarlet shirt and an official OSU hat.

It’s on Olentangy River Rd, just south of North Broadway, just next door to El Vaquero. I hadn’t heard this was coming, but I drove past today, and it looks like it’s pretty close to being open. Still not right in my ‘hood, but closer than Grove City, Whitehall, or Polaris.

I still hold out hope Sonic will decide to set up shop on the old hotel site at Dublin and Grandview, right down the street from my office…

  • Yeah, I spotted this the other day. Really popping up fast.

I wonder where the other 5 are?

  • chili cheese frito wrap FTW!

    that…sounds…awesome.

  • oh it is…

  • Should make for a good spot for a quick lunch… at least, when I’m not planning on meeting anyone else, since they don’t have an enclosed dining area.

I checked Sonic’s website and I gather that they are counting those just outside of Columbus as well. There is a Sonic in the following cities: Circleville, Heath, Urbana, London, Lancaster and Pickerington

  • Doesn’t really bother me — lots of local businesses have their staff wear OSU gear – some just on game day, but others pretty much anytime. *shrug* Seems like a hassle on their part getting non-standard unis made, but whatever.

What’s funny about that, is where that stuff is tucked back on Olentangy seems pretty isolated from the major OSU student community. Yeah, there’s a good number of students living in University Village there, and the tower back there, but the UV people are going to be heading AWAY from the Sonic to get to campus…

At least, when I lived in UV, I only ever went that way to get to Kohls…

  • oh snap. i love sonic.

ive gone to nelsonville to go to sonic before the columbus ones were open.

i usually go to the main street one. i think that one is still closer to my house than this one.

    .

    I need help enjoying Sonic.

I was so pumped when they came as the concept is one I love.

Drive-in. Greasy food. Funny commercials. All good.

    BUT

The 3 times I’ve been to Sonic were very disappointing. I’ll admit that the limeade is incredible, but the coney dog, fries/rings and one time had a breakfast sandwich (mistake!) were really sub-par to the point of dislike.

I had a burger that was pretty decent, but in general I’m sad.

Can any of you Sonic fans give ol’ BCOZ the secrets of Sonic? What can I get to turn around my disappointment? I’ll run the hell over there once I have a gameplan from the pros.

  • what breakfast sandwich did you get? i like the one that is texas toast with egg sausage and cheese.

    Yeah, that’s the one!

The “toast” had no crspness, it was like soggy nuked bread. This is the Polaris Sonic, BTW…and the server I had was…well…special.

Natch the tater tots were AOK

Ugh. I was in the SCG B&N on gameday a few weeks ago. The staff was wearing OSU gear. The customers were wearing OSU gear. I could not tell at all who worked there and who did not. Just one big sea of red shirts. :?

Me too. I enjoyed it as a treat when visiting relatives in Alabama over the years, but now that it’s here I’m not really digging on it. The food is pretty blah. The desserts are good, but nothing outstanding. Really sort of on par with Dairy Queen. Generic burgers and good oreo blizzards.

  • The highlight of Sonic for me is definitely the limeades – Cherry Limeade specifically. The tater-tots are good, and the Chili Cheese Frito Wraps are very tasty (especially if eaten relatively soon, so the fritos don’t get too soggy).

Outside of that, I’d agree the food is pretty “meh”. Really, the main reason I get into Sonic is the limeade – which is why their drink “happy hour” in the afternoons is so awesome.

yes, but IMO all fast food is meh. i dont think ive ever left a fast food joint thinking wow what a great meal…

  • I didn’t they had nearly enough desserts.

  • The Chili Cheese Frito wraps are good, but for me it is all about the SuperSonic Breakfast Burrito. I actually can’t speak to a lot of the other food items because that one gets me every time.

  • I am a huge fan of the chili & cheese tater tots. The fries get soggy, but the tots are money.

You gotta try the seasonal offerings!! The holiday ones are always good. Pumpkin pie shake thing should be up soon if it’s not already, it’s a favorite!!
