i recieved this info from cnnsports.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes was charged with domestic violence early Monday, police said.

Holmes was arrested at an apartment just after midnight and taken to Franklin County Jail, Sgt. Loucious Hollis said. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.

Hollis confirmed the domestic violence charge against Holmes, but declined to say who made the complaint or provide details of the allegation.

A message left for the Steelers by The Associated Press was not immediately returned.

It was Holmes’ second arrest since being selected in the first round of the NFL draft. He was arrested in South Beach, Fla., for disorderly conduct during a Memorial Day weekend crackdown by local authorities.

Steelers coach Bill Cowher criticized Holmes the following week, but said he wouldn’t hold the incident against the former Ohio State receiver.

“Whatever he did wrong, I don’t think he handled it properly,” Cowher said then. “I think he’ll learn from it and understand the scrutiny he’s under. We have not talked face to face about it. I don’t have any long-term concerns.”

Now, for my two cents, i’m not going to look at him in any different way until the facts are made in court. I just hope he can get past this and get his mind, body and soul focus on playing for the Steelers.

  • THat’s what that shitty city does for you. You go there and turn into a thug… haha

  • It’s stuff like this that I bet leaves Holbrook with absolutely no regrets leaving OSU – tired of trying to build OSU’s academics while facing resistance to every effort to clean up the athletics program.

Of course, she knew all this before taking the job.

  • um, yeah… this thread has nothing to do with the atrocious presidents at ohio state that have followed gordon gee. i think a wife-beater fits in well with the depth of character found on the steelers’ team.

  • it’s the first thing that came to mind when I heard the story. *shrug*

    um, go browns

while he’s innocent until proven guilty, if the charges do prove true, santonio would be a babymomma-beater, not a wife-beater.

Aren’t these two different things due to that anti-gay marriage law we passed? People who live in domestic relationships aren’t considered in the same boat as a married couple, despite their sex, right? I think this has already been a problem in other domestic violence cases….

  • i would say a babymomma and a wife are different, regardless of the gay marriage thing. if they were the same thing, then santonio would be a bigamist, eh?

what do you mean about this being a problem in other domestic violence cases? that punishment for beating a babymomma or babydaddy isn’t as harsh as punishment for beating a spouse?

  • Ohio gay marriage amendment may weaken domestic abuse laws

A public defender has begun using Ohio’s amendment that bans gay marriage to block prosecution of domestic abuse in unmarried heterosexual relationships. The Ohio amendment was the strictest in the country passed in November, in addition to banning gay marriage and civil unions, it also prevents the state, counties and cities from offering domestic partner benefits. However, the way the amendment is worded, it bans creating or recognizing legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that would give that relationship right’s similar to marriage. On at least two occasion’s the Cuyahoga County public defender’s office has argued that under the amendment spousal abuse laws do not apply to unmarried couples. Lawyers told the Cleveland Plains Dealer they believe the amendment is a violation of the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment that guarantees equal protection under the law.

I’m hunting for more examples, but most of what I’ve seen are news items and I’m not sure if they’re still online (or at least google news isn’t finding them). I’ll post more if I can find them.

Anyway, I’m not sure if this has been a problem in court yet, but people have been talking about it and think it may cause problems because of the very loose wording of the law we passed.

  • i guess i don’t know much about domestic violence laws.

does assaulting a spouse bring a heavier penalty than assaulting a non-spouse? or is it a lighter penalty? i would’ve thought assault is assault is assault. or if anything, the penalty would be lesser on domestic violence.
