An Interview With Kyle Sowash

By: Walker

Kyle Sowash is one prolific musician. A bona fide indie rock everyman, he has recorded 12 albums in the last decade. He has been a significant addition to and supporter of the Columbus music scene since the moment he moved here from Dayton in 2001. Kyle will perform at The Treehouse on May 14 with Bottomless Pit and Preston Furman.

Alex: What was the first song you learned how to play and how old were you?

Kyle: “Lithium” by Nirvana. I was 15 years old. My mom pretended she was impressed.

Alex: What’s your favorite lyric out of all the songs that you’ve ever written?

Kyle: “Your band flaked out on me, right when I needed you the most.”

Alex: How has Columbus helped you grow as a musician?

Kyle: There are a lot of good bands here. I watch them play, and I take notes.

Alex: What’s your favorite Columbus band?

Kyle: I like Super Desserts a LOT. Justin Riley is a pop mastermind, and his songs have the lushest orchestration this side of a Ray Conniff record.

Alex: Where is your favorite place to play in Columbus?

Kyle:I love playing at the Treehouse because the beer is cheap and there’s something magical about that tree in the middle of the bar.

Alex: If you could open for any band which one would it be?

Kyle: I’m still bummed we didn’t get to open for The Hold Steady back in 2007.

Alex: What does music mean to you?

Kyle: Everything, really. It keeps me sane. I just really enjoy playing music. Plus when we go on tour we get to eat cheesesteaks and hot dogs. That’s pretty cool, too.

  • Not mentioned: Kyle is one of the nicest and most polite human beings on earth.  The first time i saw him play he was a madman on stage.  It was kind of frightening, like “where the hell did THAT come from!?”

He’s also IMO the BEST booking agent in Columbus – dude knows everyyyyyone.

    Great interview.

  • Kyle sent us his most recent cd, “Yeah Buddy” for Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace. I love it. Kyle and his wife Jenny are two of my favorite Columbus folk.

  • Aw, I made Kyle read your sweet comments yesterday, and his ears turned pink! I *might* be a bit biased, but I, too, think he’s pretty great. Liz is wrong about me, though. I’m a monster.

Anyway, I’m glad Alex has undertaken this series of musician interviews — can’t wait to see who’s up next!

Edited to add: In case anyone was wondering, the awesome bendy pic of Kyle is by Kim Rottmayer of Picture the Sound. She’s both a talented photographer and an all-round super person.
