Adult Swim Programming, South Drive-In Screen

Let’s be honest, once school starts, the summer’s over – no one cares what other measure you use. But, Adult Swim is coming to turn your tears into lemonade with their free drive-in experience.

This Thursday, September 1, South Drive-in Theater (2050 South High Street) will host the event.

What shows will they bring? Will it be Bob’s Burgers? Squidbillies? Robot Chicken? Aqua Teen Hunger Force?

Probably, but Ashely Jex-Wagner, the director of events for Adult Swim, is not talking.

I mean, she is – that would have been an incredibly awkward phone call, otherwise — but she’s not talking about the lineup. Dishing on other topics is fine, though.

“We’re really excited to bring this to Columbus,” she says. “We do tours every year — we love to get out there and engage with our fans directly.”

Columbus is one of ten cities to participate in Adult Swim’s Drive-In tour.

“Columbus landed on the list because we were looking into interesting and unique classic drive-in movie theaters,” Jex-Wagner says. “We found South Drive-in and just instantly loved it, so we reached out to them and they’ve been great partners.”

    Why drive-ins?

“It’s a fun, nostalgic format,” she says. “It’s something most people don’t typically do in their every day. We love the idea of getting people together to watch TV outside in a really fun way.”

The free event will boast food trucks, some free concessions, games, pre-show trivia and a photo booth.

“It’s very much a carnival environment,” she says.

Any word at all on the program itself?

“It’s all content that’s never been seen before,” she says. “It’s unaired episodes of Adult Swim shows, infomercials, pilots — things like that. Everything that you’ll be seeing is content that you can’t currently see on Adult Swim.”

Admission is free with an RSVP to AdultSwimPresents.com. Jex-Wagner encourages people to show up early.

“Our events have been selling out quite quickly,” she says. “An RSVP does not guarantee admission.”

She suggests bringing a picnic, hanging out early and mingling with like-minded programming fans.

“We really encourage people to make new friends because everyone there are Adult Swim fans,” she says. “So far, the response has been tremendous. This is our first time here and we’re really excited to come to Columbus.”

Adult Swim Drive-In arrives Thursday, September 1 at South Drive-in. The event is 18+. The show begins at dusk, but early arrival is strongly recommended. No pets, besides service animals, are admitted. Adult Swim Drive-In is free with RSVP at adultswimpresents.com
